Best Day Ever!

Today we had the most amazing day!

The students from Brandywine Heights were able to get a bus to visit the second graders face to face. We enjoyed breakfast foods, read books together, talked about the skills they learned together, and found out how much they had in common. The buddies exchanged gifts, laughts, and hugs. What an amazing experience!

PETE&C 2009

Carin Leisure, Kirsten Ferry, and Megan Augustine at PETE&C

On Monday, February 9, this Skype project was featured in a poster session at The Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo & Conference in Hershey, PA.

Many people stopped by to learn about how Skype is being used as an educational tool for this project. They were very impressed with the students’ hard work!

Homework!

During our last session, we learned how to use quotation marks.  Second graders, you were given a homework paper with your quote written incorrectly.  Once you have written your quote correctly- with quotation marks, you will need to post your quote in a comment.

This was my quote:

if you can dream it, you can do it

Here is my quote written correctly:

Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Click on “comments” and type your quote correctly in a comment box.  Keep up the good work!

Partner Skype : One-to-one

Today the students had the opportunity to talk one-to-one with their buddies via Skype.  The second graders had researched who said the quote that was assigned to them at our last session.  During the one-to-one talk, the second graders reported who said the quote and earned a sticker for their chart.  Then the pairs had an opportunity to ask questions and get to know each other.  The second graders really enjoyed the personal conversations that they had with their buddies — they used to think that 12th graders were scary, but they don’t believe that anymore!

Our First Skype Session

Today we had our first Skype session between the second graders and twelfth graders.  Using a camera, projector, and Skype, the two classes were able to see and hear each other just as if they were in the same room, not many miles away from each other.

The two classes introduced themselves, and then Mrs. Ferry introduced the concept of plagiarism to the second grade students.  The second graders learned the importance of not stealing another person’s words.

The twelfth graders each came before the camera and called the name of their second grade buddy.  They had a chance to ask a question, and then the twelfth graders gave each second grader a memorable quote to research.  The next time we meet, the second graders will report back to their buddy about who said the quote.
