GARDEN SPOT 3/21 – beautiful day, beautiful throws!

It has been one of the warmest seasons to date and the throws showed it!  Because this is a scrimmage, no points or qualifications can be earned; however, athletes did earn new personal records and season-bests!

BOYS JAVELIN

Sophomore NATE BINKLEY threw a personal record for SECOND place with a throw of 146′ 1″  Senior JARED EMEL had a personal best and amazing first meet with a throw of 137′ 3″ earning THIRD

BOYS DISCUS

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK threw close to his personal record with a SECOND place throw of 126′ 11.  On the third throw, he was in first with a throw of 123′; however, a senior Garden-Spot athlete threw 137′ 2″ on his final throw.  126′ 11″ is Darren’s second best throw on record at a meet.  Last year, his best was 131′ 11″.

BOYS SHOT PUT

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK took FIRST place with a new, personal best of 41′ 7.25″  This is over a two-foot improvement!

 

GIRLS DISCUS

Senior MEGAN HAINES took FIRST place with a new, personal best of 115′ 5″.  This is just about a 5-foot improvement over last season’s 110′ 7″.  Senior co-captain JESS HUBER took SECOND in the discus with a new, personal best of 95′ 8″  – this was accomplished while Jess was competing for first place in the triple jump.  Other significant accomplishments were PRs from: sophomore Katie Stringer 88′ 5″ (missed 3rd place by 3 feet); senior Karla Mylin 83′ 2″ and freshmen Abbie Hamby 77’11”

GIRLS SHOT PUT

Sophomore KATIE STRINGER took THIRD place with a throw of 29′ 4″  This was close to her personal best from last season.

GIRLS JAVELIN

It was good competition in the javelin and the girls let it bring the best out of them!  Senior co-captain JESS HUBER took THIRD place with a throw of 97′ 9″  This is a season-best for Jess.  Other significant accomplishments were PRs from: senior Megan Haines 91′; and senior Karla Mylin 90′ 1″

HEMPFIELD BRINGS THE WIND, COMPETITION

GIRLS JAVELIN

Co-captain and senior JESS HUBER earns SECOND with a throw of  97′ 7″ – this is just two inches off her season best.  Karla Mylin made finals with a throw of 90′ – she missed 3rd place by 2 feet.  One other throw to note was senior Lauren Gerlach with a throw of 64′ 3″

GIRLS SHOT

The girls brought out some surprises/personal records and their FIRST SWEEP!  Earning THIRD was sophomore KATIE STRINGER with a season best put of 30′ 1″.  Senior KARLA MYLIN placed SECOND with a new personal best throw of 31′ 10.5″  This is a foot improvement from last season and just a few inches away from the league meet!  In FIRST place was co-captain and senior LAURA WISSLER with a throw of 35′ 1.25  This qualifies her for the Lancaster-Lebanon League conference meet.

GIRLS DISCUS

Senior Karla Mylin made finals with a new personal record of 83′ 3″ In THIRD place was sophomore KATIE STRINGER with a throw of 84′ 1″  In FIRST place was senior, co-captain, JESS HUBER with a personal best throw of 102′ 4″  This is a 10-foot improvement off her 2010 season-best throw.  This was Jess’ “first” time earning 5 points in the discus and the throw qualifies her for the Lancaster-Lebanon League meet.  Another significant PR in exhibition was sophomore Paige Blazic with a new PR of 69′ 10″ – this is over a 20 foot improvement from last year!

BOYS SHOT PUT

Senior, co-captain DARREN SPIRK made close to a two-foot improvement from our first scrimmage last week.  This was a very close competition: Darren went into finals seeded second with a final-preliminary PR of 42′ 7.5″  In finals, however, a Hempfield competitor beat him with a throw of 42′ 11.5″  Darren could’ve ended up in third, but on his last throw of the final round, he earned SECOND with the new personal best of 43′ 6.25″

BOYS DISCUS

Senior, co-captian DARREN SPIRK had another PR!  He threw 136′ 5″ earning THIRD.  This throw also qualifies Darren for the Lancaster Lebanon League Meet.  Hempfield’s second place thrower was very close with a 139′ 11″  Other good throws included Adrian Zotti with a new season-best of 109′ 5″ and exhibition-throw from freshmen Brent Neely at 81′ 4″

BOYS JAVELIN

Sophomore NATE BINKLEY has another PR in the javelin with a SECOND place throw of 147′ 4″  Junior LUIS MARCELINO also had a huge PR, earning THIRD with a throw of 139′ 11″  Other good throws included sophomore Nate Lewis with a throw of 124′ 3″ and an exhibition-throw from junior Mike Stehman at 100′ 8″

 

Conclusion: Don’t let the wind knock you off your feet.  Don’t let the competition undermine your Comet-streak!

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK earned FIRST with another NEW PR (!) this year: 44 FEET EVEN!  Another best was sophomore BOBBY NAPIER with SECOND place PR of 39’ 5.5”  Another honor was Adrian Zotti making finals in the shot with a new PR of 35’ 11.5”

BOYS DISCUS

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK earned FIRST with a throw of  127’ 6”.  This was Darren’s first DOUBLE-WIN in a meet.

BOYS JAVELIN

Senior JARED EMEL earns SECOND with a throw of 137’ 3” This matches his PR from the GS Scrimmage!  Junior LUIS MARCELINO throws an upset in finals with a throw of 127’  Luis earns THIRD PLACE and this beat Warwick’s third place finalist 126’ 1”.

 

GIRLS JAVELIN

It was a “SWEEP” or a “SWIPE” (as Karla Mylin likes to call it).  Senior co-captain JESS HUBER earned FIRST with 97’ 9.  This is a new season-best for Jess.  Senior MEGAN HAINES earned SECOND with an 83’ 1”  And senior KARLA MYLIN earned THIRD 80’ 9”  In fourth during the finals, Shanell Bailey had a PR of 72’ 9”

GIRLS SHOT

Senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER qualifies for DISTRICTS!  Her series ranged from 35’ 2.5” to 37’ 4” and she maintained the lead throughout the event.  This FIRST place throw of 37’ 4” is a season best for Laura.  Senior KARLA MYLIN earned THIRD place with a throw of 29’ 6.25”  Other personal records in exhibition, sophomore Becca Woomer threw 25’ 1” and junior Shanell Bailey had a PR of 25’ .75”

Senior MEGAN HAINES earned FIRST with a throw of 96’ 9” (inches off of leagues).  Senior co-captain JESS HUBER earned THIRD with a throw of 90’ 10”

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK earned FIRST with ANOTHER (!) PR in the shot: 44′ 8.5″ (!!!)  Sophomore Bobby Napier made finals and senior Mike Weber had a PR in his first varsity appearance with 34′ even.

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK earned FIRST with a throw of 132′ 9″  This is Darren’s second DOUBLE WIN in a meet!  In exhibition, senior Bryson Neely had a season-best 90′ 1″ and freshmen Brent Neely had a new PR of 89′ 5″  Go lil’ brotha!  And sophomore Dennis Torbet had a PR of 81′ 6″

Junior LUIS MARCELINO earned FIRST with a PR of 156′ 3″  This is a league-qualifying throw!  It’s also a 17 FOOT improvement over his last PR!  Sophomore NATE BINKLEY earned THIRD with a throw of 141′ 9″  In exhibition, junior Mike Stehman had a new personal record of 113′ 3″ and sophomore Bobby Napier had a PR of 101′ 3″

Senior MEGAN HAINES earned THIRD place with a new PR of 97′ 1″  Senior Jess Huber made finals with a 96′ 2″

Senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER earned FIRST place with a throw of 37′ 1″  Sophomore Becca Woomer threw a PR of 26′ 2.5″  Junior Shanell Bailey threw a PR of 25′ 10.25″ And sophomore Paige Blazic had a PR of 22′ 8 (a couple of inches off of last season)

GIRLS DISCUS

A FIRST-TIME SWEEP/SWIPE in the discus this season!  Senior MEGAN HAINES earned FIRST with an-official league-meet PR of 111′ 6″  This qualifies for leagues AND is a couple of feet off of districts.  As of April 10, two PM females are competing in the discus at the conference meet: Both Megan and Jess Huber have qualified.  In SECOND place was JESS HUBER with a throw of 92′ 7″  In THIRD place was LAURA WISSLER with a throw of 89′ 5″ (a season-best).  Senior Karla Mylin just missed finals with a new PR of 86′ 1″ – this is a twelve foot improvement off of her lifetime PR of 2010.  In exhibition, sophomore Kelly St. John had new a PR of 63′ 10″ – this is a five foot improvement from last year!

BLACK KNIGHT INVITE: THROWER-FINALISTS IN MOST EVENTS

Boys Shot Put – Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK earns THIRD (6 points) with a throw of 42′ 5″.       Sophomore Bobby Napier also makes FINALS: he threw a PR of 39′ 7″ AND he improved his seed from 12th to 9th.

Girls Shot Put – Senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER earns SECOND (8 points) with a throw of 36′ 10″.  Laura also earned second at this meet in 2010, and in 2009, she got fourth with a throw of 32′ 4.75!  You’ve come a long way, Laura!  Sophomore KATIE STRINGER has a HUGE PR of 34′ on her first throw and places THIRD (6 points).  This is a close to a three-foot improvement from last year and the PR also qualifies Katie for the Lancaster-Lebanon meet.  We now have two females qualified in the shot.  “Abby Hamby” also improved her seed from 24th to a tie for 19th.

Boys Discus – Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK earns FIFTH (4 points) with a throw of 129′  Sophomore Adrian Zotti improves his seed from 18th to 12th with a throw of 106′ 8″ – very close to his personal best.

Girls Discus – Senior MEGAN HAINES earns THIRD (6 points) with a throw of 102′ 5″

Boys Javelin – Junior LUIS MARCELINO earns EIGHTH (1 point) with a throw of 129′ 5″

Senior MEGAN HAINES threw 76′ 3″ for THIRD place.  Senior Lauren Gerlach PRed as a varsity thrower 67′ 9″  and senior Michelle Dempsey threw a PR of 61′ 11″

Boys Shot

Senior co-captian DARREN SPIRK had ANOTHER (!!!) personal record at 44′ 10″  He took FIRST in the shot put.  In exhibition, senior Bryson Neely had a PR of 31′ 3″

Girls Shot

Senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER took first with a throw of 36′ 4″  In exhibition, sophomore Liz Revelt had a PR at 23′ 4.75″

Boys Discus

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK had FIRST with 132′ 3″  – this is the third time Darren has had a DOUBLE-WIN this season! 

For his debut on varsity, freshmen Brent Neely had a PR of 95′ 7″  Adrian Zotti got close to his PR with a 108′ 11 and just missed third place.  In exhibition, senior Bryson Neely had a season best at 96′ 8″  The battle-of-da-brothas continues!!

Girls Discus

The girls only scored 6 points in the meet before the discus.  They knew they needed to get some points to help the team win the meet.  Senior MEGAN HAINES led the team with her first throw of 100’2″.  Taking second in the preliminaries was sophomore Katie Stringer with a PR of 94′ 1″  The other team had third with a throw of 90′  From out of the “sheep fold” comes Laura Wissler with a new season best of 96’1″  In all the excitement, the girls had done their best to sweep.  Then, on sophomore KATIE STRINGER’S last throw, she gets another PR of 99′ 6″  This is a league-qualifying throw!  The whole team was anticipating a BIG WIN!  And then, on Manheim Central’s last throw, another PR was made 99’10” – taking second.  The final results were MEGAN HAINES, FIRST, with a throw 101′ and KATIE STRINGER with THIRD 99′ 6″.  Laura’s season-best held third place for a moment!  Thankfully the girls team was able to pull out a close win overall!  Phew!!!!!  In exhibition, sophomore Kelly St. John had a PR of 69′ 6″ and sophomore Becca Woomer had PR of 66′ 4″

In FIRST place was senior-co-captain LAURA WISSLER  with a throw of 35′ 6.75″  In SECOND was sophomore KATIE STRINGER with a throw of 31′ .25″  In THIRD was senior KARLA MYLIN with a throw of 29′ 4″  GIRLS SWEEP SHOT!  In exhibition, sophomore Becca Woomer had a PR 27′ 4″ and sophomore Liz Revelt had a PR of 25′ 5.25″

Winning her FIRST dual-meet was sophomore KATIE STRINGER with a new PR of 103′ 5″ (!!!)  She improved her league-seed and got closer to district-qualifying.  In SECOND was senior MEGAN HAINES with a throw of 102′ 6″ and in THIRD was senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER with a throw of 89′ 1″ Senior Karla Mylin also made finals to ensure the girls sweep!  In exhibition, senior Beth Dengler hit an official new PR of 73′ 11″ and sophomore Becca Woomer had a new of PR of 69′ 11″

Winning his FIRST dual-meet was sophomore NATE BINKLEY with a throw of 144′ 8″  In THIRD was LUIS MARCELINO with a throw of 128′ 10″

The athletes who qualified were Darren Spirk (shot, discus); Laura Wissler (shot, discus); Megan Haines (discus, javelin); Karla Mylin (shot, javelin); Katie Stringer (shot); Adrian Zotti (shot, discus); Bobby Napier (shot), Luis Marcelino (javelin) and Nate Binkley (javelin).

The meet was crawling with schools and people and many athletes were able to rise to the competition.  Senior co-captain Darren Spirk placed EIGHTH in the shot put with a throw of 44′ .5″  Senior co-captain Laura Wissler placed SECOND in the shot put with a throw of 36′ 5.5″  She improved from a 3rd place seed to 2nd.  Later in the evening, senior co-captain Darren Spirk placed FIFTH in the discus with a throw of 133′ 7″  He improved from a 7th place seed to 5th.

Other results…junior Luis Marcelino threw the javelin 147′  Sophomore Nate Binkley threw the javelin 143′ 2″ – improving his seed from 23rd to 15th!!  In the boys shot, sophomore Bobby Napier threw 38′ 4.5″ -improving his seed from 39th to 26th!!  Sophomore Adrian Zotti threw the shot 33′ .5″ and threw the discus 112′ 2″ – improving his seed from 34th to 17th!!!

In the girls discus, senior Megan Haines just missed placing: She finished 9th with a throw of 103′ 6″  Laura threw 85′ 6 “- but only had one attempt, so she could compete in the shot put.  Sophomore Katie Stringer threw 29′ 9″ in shot and senior Karla Mylin 29′ 7″  Then, at dusk, seniors Karla Mylin and Megan Haines threw the javelin.  Megan threw 87′ 4″ and Karla threw 89′ 1″ – improving her seed from 26th to 21st.

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK took FIRST with a PR of 45′ 1″  Sophomore BOBBY NAPIER took SECOND with a throw of 38′ 3.5″  In exhibition, senior Bryson Neely had a new PR of 32′ .75″

Boys Discus

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK took FIRST with a throw of 137′ 6″  All of his throws were over 133′ 1″!  Consistent day for Darren, PLUS this was his FOURTH DOUBLE-WIN this season.  Out of six dual meets, Darren has won shot and discus in four.  Senior Bryson Neely had a new PR of 99’!!  Adrian Zotti just missed 3rd place, but made finals with a 106′ 6″

Girls Shot Put

Senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER earned SECOND with a throw of 36′ – she was just behind the competition who threw 37′ 10″.  Sophomore KATIE STRINGER threw 31′ 3.5″ for THIRD place.  And senior Karla Mylin made finals with 29′ 6.5″  In exhibition, Shannel Bailey had a PR 26′ 6.25

Girls Discus

Senior MEGAN HAINES took SECOND with a throw of 101′ 9″  Then, SAM HILL (!), senior-co-captain LAURA WISSLER earned THIRD with a throw of 100′ – this is a season BEST and league-qualifier(!!)  Comet-chuckers now have THREE CURRENT ATHLETES QUALIFIED FOR THE LEAGUE-MEET!  MEGAN HAINES, KATIE STRINGER, and LAURA WISSLER!  Other special notes were Haines’ attempted grunt – click here for sample!

 HENDERSON HIGH SCHOOL – PUMA WEST CHESTER HENDERSON MEET RESULTS

The competition INCREASED at this meet!  It was a very exciting way to be pushed and one more opportunity for throwers to show their STRENGTH, POWER, SPEED, and TECHNIQUE!

Qualifiers

In the boys javelin, sophomore NATE BINKLEY qualified for the league-meet with a throw of 157′ 2″.  This was a PR! (In addition to the other PR for Nate at this meet: a throw of 150′ on his first attempt!)  Nate also improved his seed at the meet: He finished 10th (!!) but was seeded at 19th!!!!  PM now has two male athletes qualified for the javelin in the league-meet (Nate and Luis).

Senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER earned a FIFTH-PLACE medal in the shot and earned the girls team 4 points.  She improved her seed in the discus from 16th to 12th with a throw of 96′ 4″

Senior MEGAN HAINES earned a SECOND-PLACE medal in the shot and earned the girls team 8 points.  Megan’s entered finals in 4th place; however, on her very last throw, she CAPTURED 2nd by throwing 109′ 5″

Other athletes throwing close to their average were seniors Karla Mylin and Darren Spirk.  Karla threw 29′ 8.25″ in shot and 85′ 1″ in the javelin.  Co-captain Darren threw 131′ 4″ in the discus: He maintained his 14th place seed.  In the shot put, Darren threw 43′ 3″

Out of SEVEN, SCORED “DUAL” MEETS (including non-league Central): THE THROWER GIRLS AND BOYS WERE ONLY OUTSCORED 2/7 meets.

Girls Discus!  The girls SWEPT the discus tonight.  It’s the THIRD TIME this season!  In FIRST was senior MEGAN HAINES with a throw of 109′ 9″  This was her VERY FIRST THROW!  (And surpasses last weekend’s best) In SECOND was senior LAURA WISSLER with a throw of 99’8  In THIRD was sophomore KATIE STRINGER with a throw of 88′ 5″  And ensuring the sweep in fourth was senior Karla Mylin with a throw of 80′ 6″  These points also helped the girls team win the meet overall!  In exhibition there were MANY PRs.  Sophomores Paige Blazic (75′ 1″) ; Becca Woomer (71′); Kelly St. John (70′ 5″)

Earning FIRST with a season-best performance is senior co-captain LAURA WISSLER with a throw of 37′ 9.  This improves her league-seed.  In THIRD place was KATIE STRINGER at 32′ 8″ and in finals was senior Karla Mylin with 29′ 5″  Also throwing for varsity was junior Shanell Bailey with a PR of 28′ 10″!!  In exhibition, sophomore Paige Blazic had a PR of 25′ 8″  HUGE!

Senior MEGAN HAINES earns SECOND with 88′ 6″  Senior KARLA MYLIN earns THIRD with a throw of 85′ 5 ”  Junior Shanell Bailey PRed with 77′  And senior Lauren Gerlach PRed 71′ 11″  In exhibition, senior Michelle Dempsey PRed with 67′ 6″

Taking SECOND place was junior LUIS MARCELINO 150′ 7″ – this is close to his PR.  In THIRD place senior JARED EMEL ends his jav career with a PR of 145′ 5″ Sophomore Nate Binkley made finals with 143′

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK wins FIRST with a 133′ 1″  It was a close contest in finals, but he came out on top in his second-to-last and final throw.  Sophomore Adrian Zotti made finals with a throw of 112′ 6″ (close to his PR).

Senior co-captain DARREN SPIRK takes SECOND with a NEW PR of 45′ 10.5″  This is Darren’s sixth PR in shot during the season!  (Out of 7 scored-dual meets).  Sophomore Will Dunford had a  PR of 35′ 8.25″

Girls Discus

On Friday night, sophomore KATIE STRINGER and seniors MEGAN HAINES and LAURA WISSLER competed in the discus.  It was a very exciting time especially because the seniors were looking forward to their PROM NIGHT that same evening!!  ALL THREE GIRLS MADE FINALS IN THE EVENT.  9 athletes were allowed into the finals.  Megan went into finals seeded 2nd with a throw of ______  Katie went into finals in fifth with a tie at 99′ 2″  And Laura Wissler went into finals in eighth place.  Katie finished SIXTH with medal.  This improved Katie’s seed

  1. Hempfield Meet: Agh!! I am so happy right now! Glad to hear things went so well! DARREN (spelled correctly) did awesome! I am soooo proud of him! Please tell him congrats for me! Really proves how hard of a worker he is! He deserves every minute of his success! Also proud of Adrian! Bright future for him! Great to hear that Jess did so fabulous AND she qualified for leagues in discus! That’s two in already and we know there will be more to come!!! :) Penn Manor has the best and hardest working THROWERS and THROWING coaches around!! Can’t wait for what the season holds!

  2. Miss Vita you are a wonderful, young, and dazzling woman. I’m very sorry I couldn’t be part of the comet Chuuuuuuuckaahhhhs this year. I miss throwing javelin, lifting, and stretching with my bro. I also miss your smiling face. It’s gonna be a sad spring without me, but you can make it. I’ll be at some of your meets to support your troops. I’ll see ya. Love Liam.
