Where Parents, Teachers and Kids Team for Education!

Kids, kids, kids!

Filed under: Uncategorized — pequea at 9:31 pm on Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Pequea parents, we are in need your help.   We are noticing that many children are coming to school earlier and earlier, and although we love spending as much time as possible with your children, we do not have the staff to monitor all of these kids.   I have asked all of the teachers to remind students that they are not to be dropped off before 8:50 A.M.    The only exceptions to this rule would be the students who are attending a before school program like P.E.S.T. club, chorus or Pequea’s breakfast program.    We appreciate your help in this matter.

Jump Rope for Heart Results from Mr. Binkley

Filed under: Uncategorized — pequea at 9:20 pm on Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Every year our students participate in an annual Jump Rope for Heart.   Just this past week Mr. Binkley reported that Pequea raised a total of $4,586.58 for the American Heart Association!  This number was down a bit from last year but considering our hard work toward Paces for Pequea and the state of the economy we viewed this as a celebration.  Below are some statistics reported by Mr. Binkley.
  • Pequea had a total of 104 participants
  • 5th grade had 42% participate in the program (Best among all grades)
  • 6th grade raised $1,270 alone!!! (Best among all grades)
  • Abby Geiger raised $302 (Best among all students)

And we have another new blogger….

Andrew Mintzer participates in the 2008 Youth Band Fest

Filed under: Uncategorized — pequea at 10:04 pm on Sunday, November 23, 2008
At 2:30 pm on Saturday, November 22, beautiful music flowed from the hall at Lampeter-Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center as 200 elementary band students representing 25 school districts participated in the 2008 Youth Band Fest.  Sixth grade trumpet player Andrew Mintzer was there to take part in the learning and fun.

Nominated by Pequea music teacher Mrs. Sue Hamer, Andrew played in the “White Band” directed by guest conductor Mrs. Martha Boonshaft of Long Island, New York.  A second ensemble called the “Blue Band” was conducted by Penn Manor High School music teacher & Marticville Middle School band director Mr. Skip Reddig.  The Friday evening/Saturday event was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association.

When asked what it was like to play in a 100-piece band, Andrew answered, “It’s cool…and hard.  You can’t mess up.”  And how did he feel about the whole experience?  “It was fun.  It was brilliantly spectacular!”
We are all very proud of Andrew!

Veterans Day Celebration, Dedicated to Lcpl Chris Johnson

Filed under: Uncategorized — pequea at 9:34 pm on Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Today we honored Veterans everywhere at our annual Veterans Day Program.   This year’s program was dedicated to Lance Corporal Christopher Dean Johnson.    He was our guest speaker at our Veterans Day program for 2007 and has since tragically died in a boating accident in May of 2008.   We were very fortunate to have the musical group of Mrs.Campbell, Mrs. Huber, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Aukamp.   We were also pleased to hear from Pastor Ken Lefever and Melvin Myers.    This was an emotional day for all of us and educational for our children.  I appreciate the hard work of Ms. Kathy Zerby every year to develop such a wonderful program.

Penn Manor Perks!

Filed under: Uncategorized — pequea at 3:26 pm on Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Today we hosted the very first Penn Manor Perks story time. We had 28 kids attend our program.   I have huge hopes that word of mouth will make this program grow. This is a new initiative that evolved from the development of the Penn Manor transition team which was established to ease the transition from preschool or home to school. Penn Manor will offer the Perks story time every first Wednesday of the month from 9:30-10:15. The location changes every month, so parents can see all of our elementary schools.   It was very exciting to meet so many future Penn Manor students.

  • December 3rd, Central Manor
  • January 7th, Marticville Middle School
  • February 4th, Eshleman
  • March 4th, Conestoga
  • April 1st, Hambright
  • May 6th, LeTort

Jack Hubley presents “Birds of Prey” to third grade

Filed under: Uncategorized — pequea at 4:11 pm on Thursday, October 30, 2008

Third graders at Pequea are required to complete a book project once a marking period to promote at-home reading. Braden Steele completed his book project by reading the book, A-Z Mysteries, The Falcon Feather. After completing his book project he thought the perfect way to conclude would be to contact Jack Hubley and arrange for a visit. Braden worked with his family, to get in touch with Mr. Hubley and set up a grade level assembly for his peers. Today, Jack Hubley brought four different birds of prey to share with our students. (Red tailed hawk, Harris Hawk, Peregrine Falcon and a Great Horned Owl) Check out the pictures below. Another interesting fact about Mr. Hubley; he is much better at classifying birds than princesses. Ask a third grader to explain this inside joke!
