Changing Default Applications On Ubuntu

If you’ve got no idea how to change your default applications in Ubuntu don’t fret for it is a simple task. Before we get started you should probably know why you would need to do this. Depending on the extension of a file some files will not work with certain programs. So changing the program to one that can read your file will allow them to work. Another reason might be if you do not have internet connectivity at home some apps will not work and will not allow you to work while unconnected. That being said, lets get started!

Step One: Log into your laptop and go to your dashboard. Which will look like this:Home Screen

Step Two: Get yourself onto your toolbar. The toolbar looks like this:

Ubuntu Toolbar

Step Three: Locate the “System Setting” app and double click into it

System Settings

Once clicking into it, it will look like this:

System Settings Page

Step Four: Locate the “System” section of System Settings:

System Setting System

Step Five: Locate and double click the “Details” options

Details Page

Step Six: Locate and click into the “Default Applications” section.

Default Applications

After doing that it will change the information on the right into this:

Current Defaults

Step Seven: Click the down arrow to see other available applications, and pick your desired application out of the list

Selection_002

Step Eight: After completing the previous seven steps you can now exit out of all windows back to the dashboard and open your desired file.

If you try all of the pre-loaded applications on your laptop and non of them can read the file you are trying to read. Send a ticket in asking for a recommended application to install. Go to https://studentsupport.pennmanor.net/student_login.php and follow directions to put in a ticket.
