Podcast 011 – Easy as Pi

Raspberry Pi is a $35 mini computer. They’re portable and can be used for smaller projects that cannot use a bigger system. Different projects have been tested and created using Raspberry Pi’s because the Open Source software allows the user to easily control and manipulate the codes. It allows a arrange of ideas to be formulated from the daily lifestyle to even putting a Pi in space.

This video shows some Raspberry Pi project.

For the original list of projects visit this article,
a few of the projects are listed below.

The official Raspberry Pi site also has more information.

This one by Michael Davis for an all-in-one desktop computer is on the easier end. It has a short list of needed materials and lets you put an old monitor and keyboard to use. Extended Batteries and Battery Life Saving Accessories

Article by:Spencer Creasy

Edited by:Brielle Bitts

Most modern portable devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops have great battery life, but sometimes you might not have enough juice to power through the day. There is nothing worse than being on 1% and searching for a place to plug in your phone before it dies. Android devices make it easy to swap the battery out for a new one, allowing you to carry the 2nd battery with you so you can survive the day with a full charge. Many Android devices also have the luxury of an SD card slot to expand storage, unlike Apple devices. A user with an Apple device would have to get a charging case or portable power pack to have extended battery life. For example Samsung’s Note 4 (pictured to the left), has a stock battery that is a size of 3220mAh with fast charging. The Note 4 requires larger batteries to power itself since the screen and the modern hardware takes up battery life. Battery life can be used up depending on what tasks the phone user is completing such as, gaming or watching videos. The Note 4 already has great battery life, but you can add an extended battery to take it to the next level. Just be safe when purchasing batteries or tech products and lookout for fakes.

Extended Batteries & Accessories

Screenshot from 2016-05-12 09:34:53Extended batteries can be purchased for many devices. They can be found usually by googling your device name and extended battery. Our example device is Samsung’s Note 4.

Zerolemon is a trusted brand which is known for their extended batteries for various phone models. Zerolemon sells a 10000mAh battery for the Note 4 for $59.99 on Amazon. 10000mAh is a large battery and some reviewers on Amazon state that they can use their phone for about 4-5 days without having to charge it. This is a substantial upgrade from the stock 3220mAh battery. The battery life can be affected by the screen on time and what tasks are being completed on the device.

Zerolemon has many color options available for their battery cases, unlike other brands.

Below are photos of the Zerolemon case and 10000mAh battery for the Note 4

For Apple devices, battery cases can be purchases such as the Mophie Juice Pack for around $59 for the iPhone 6s or other Apple devices. The battery acts as a case for the device.

There is also an option to purchase a portable battery charger for devices if you don’t want a bulky case, if there isn’t an extended battery available for your device. Portable batteries are usually universal with USB devices.

Beware of Fake Products Online

Created by: Spencer Creasy

Reviewed by: Brielle Bitts

Shopping online for tech gadgets can be a great way to find something that would be much cheaper than going to a local store to buy something. Watch out when you are buying items online and remember if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Sellers on sies such as ebay.com might add official logos to packaging to their fake products, so whoever purchases the item believes it is genuine. SD cards and flash drives are commonly sold online that may look like they are a larger capacity (example 16gb), but they actually are smaller size (16gb) or the cards might not function at all. Sellers may purchase low capacity cards and make them look like they are a larger capacity when they plug the card into a computer or phone. The cards usually will corrupt files that the user adds to the card, making the card useless.

Packaging of products can look similar to the real products, but sometimes it can be hard to notice it. Packaging on fake products can look like it is faded or may have misspelled words. The picture below shows the fake package on the left and the original on the right.

Products such as batteries may have the incorrect size and they might hold less of a charge than what they are claiming to hold. Fake aftermarket products with fake logos also most likely don’t undergo proper safety testing and could be harmful, an example is below.

macbook-battery-about-to-explode

In 2013, a Samsung Galaxy S3 exploded in an 18-year-old girl’s pants pocket, giving her third-degree burns. An investigation revealed that the battery inside the Galaxy S3 wasn’t the original battery, but was a knock-off battery — a counterfeit battery that even had the Samsung logo on it. It’s not hard to find other reports of smartphone batteries exploding and injuring people or burning down buildings, and it’s usually not clear whether an aftermarket battery is to blame. – Howtogeek.com

Not all products online are fake and there are many aftermarket items that work correctly are safe, just remember to look out and watch what you purchase.

Social Media Saves Lives?

Article By: Spencer Creasy and Susan Black

Social media has proven to have negative and positive effects on one’s life. Negative implying threats, bullying, hackers, credit theft, etc. The positive side being that someone’s life is saved. After reading this article by MNN, I have linked a few stories to how technology has saved the lives involved. Everyone uses technology, whether it’s using a tablet, smartphone, laptop, wearable devices, etc. All of these devices can impact a person’s life and allow them to live more efficiently and help everyone be safe.

Biker Crashes in Woods and Tweets for Help

Biker crashed and lost in the woods

Leigh Fazzina was a 36 year old, competing in a mini-triathlon in June of 2010. Unfortunately, she was separated from the rest of the competitors when her front wheel hit tree roots, which shot her from bike. She was unaware of the area, wounded and didn’t have signal to call for help. She was lucky that Twitter was working and she was able to send a tweet saying: “I’ve had a serious injury and NEED Help! Can someone please call Winding Trails in Farmington, CT tell them I’m stuck bike crash in woods.”. Many calls were made in an effort to help this woman, and ambulances were dispatched to help her within minutes.

This proves the point that if technology is used correctly, then it can benefit the user. This woman was injured and unable to move around easy and using her phone (although she couldn’t use it to call) she was able to seek help via Twitter, a social media website. It’s a popular site, and is checked/updated a lot. This can help someone in distress because it can draw in attention and information that the authorities can use.

iPhone helps save an Earthquake survivor

Earthquake survivor trapped in rubble

Dan Woolley was in his homeland Haiti, Colorado Springs and a earthquake hit in 2010. Dan was trapped under rubble and it resulted with him having injures. He used the light of his iPhone’s camera look for a safe place to go to after his glasses broke. Dan also used his iphone application to learn how to treat his injuries. Dan was panicked about going into shock so he also used his phones alarm clock to keep him awake. Dan Woolley was rescued from an elevator shaft after about 65 hours.

Online Friends over Facebook

Facebook screenshotA distressed 16 year old male from Britain, sent a message via Facebook to a friend located in the United States. This message entailed that he was going to harm himself. Even though she was 3,400 miles away, the girl was worried and told her mother which called the police. Soon the British Embassy was contacted and made aware of the situation. A race was created to find the teeager before something bad happened to him, and after searching eight addresses he was found. He had overdosed on drugs, but was still conscious and okay after seeking treatment in the hospital.
