Modified Early Dismissal

Penn Manor will be getting out even earlier today because of the winter weather that will be arriving.   Secondary students will be dismissed at 11:20 and elementary students will be dismissed at 12:30.   The students will be served lunch before they leave.  Mrs. Falk and Mrs. Eckroat hope that everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!  See you Tuesday, December 2.

Let’s go sail a boat!

Both classes had a great morning last Tuesday when the technology department from Millersville University came to Conestoga.  The college students designed a lesson and activity around renewable energy which is what the students are learning about in science.

Our fifth graders learned about wind energy and how it affects the movement of sailboats.   Each student designed his/her own boat, constructed it, and had the opportunity to sail it to see how fast it went.  The groups then calculated the mean, median, and mode of their results.

It was a fun-filled morning with numerous hands-on learning opportunities!

Scarecrow Construction!

Both fifth grade classes spent time last week reading the story “Scarebird” by Sid Fleischman.  It is a story about a lonely old farmer who realizes the value of human friendship when a young man comes to help him and his scarecrow with their farm.  After in-class discussions on the main idea, supporting details, and theme of the story, the students created scarecrows of their own that demonstrated their knowledge of the story.

Everyone had fun making unique and creative scarecrows that are now displayed in the fifth grade hallway!
