Headphones Requested

Before the holiday break, we began trying out a new program through Scholastic called “Core Clicks”.  Because this is an individual program where each student progresses at his/her own speed, we asked the students to bring headphones in to school if possible.  (There are numerous parts to the program where the students watch videos and listen for information)

We would like to request for students to do the same thing this coming week (January 3-6) as we continue to try out “Core Clicks”.   Unfortunately, we do not have enough headphones for all 50 fifth grade students, so if the students have headphones they can bring it, it will be a huge help!

Thank you so much!  We hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Learning about the holidays

During the past week, the fifth grade has been discussing the holidays celebrated at this time of  year.  One of the books the classes read was Seven Spools of Thread which incorporated the seven principles of Kwanzaa.  Yesterday, in addition to completing a few Hanukkah activities, the fifth grade created a bracelet that was woven together with 7 “gold” beads to remind them of the seven principles and the lesson learned in Seven Spools of Thread.  Today, the classes will be completing a compare and contrast activity with Christmas.

We hope that all of your families have a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year!  We will see your children back in school on Tuesday, January 3, 2017!

Landis Valley’s “Traveling Trunk”

Yesterday, thanks to a grant from the Penn Manor Education Foundation, Landis Valley presented their “Traveling Trunk” stations on colonial America to both of the fifth grade classes at Conestoga.   The students rotated through four different 25 minute hands-on stations where they learned about archaeology, wool pulling and weaving, reverse glass painting, thaumatropes (or “Wonder Turner”), and starting a fire with flint and steel.

We are sure that your children had a lot to tell you about last evening about our busy morning and to show you what they made!  Below are a few pictures of our fun and educational morning.

In addition, Sheri Brown from Landis Valley wanted to make all families aware of a FREE event they are having tomorrow evening (December 16) at Landis Valley.   There will be a large bonfire outside with hot apple cider and cookies.  They will also have many of the buildings at Landis Valley open and decorated for Christmas.  If you have never had the opportunity to visit Landis Valley, this is an event to see during the holidays…..and it’s FREE!

This Week in Fifth Grade!

A few reminders about this week:

  1.  On Wednesday, Landis Valley Museum is coming into our classrooms to present a “Traveling Trunk” presentation on colonial life in America.  The students will travel through four different hands-on stations.  This event is being paid for by a grant through the Penn Manor Education Foundation, and we are very appreciative of their support. Watch for more information coming home with your child and pictures on our blog.
  2.  The students are having a test on the thirteen colonies unit on Thursday.  Mrs. Eckroat’s class is coming home today with a study guide and map of the thirteen colonies to study for Thursday.  Mrs. Falk’s class will be coming home with the study guide and map tomorrow.  Any review at home that the kiddos can do will greatly benefit them on Thursday.
  3. Jump Rope for Heart is coming up….Mrs. Eckroat’s class will be participating on Friday, December 16, and Mrs. Falk’s class will be participating on Monday, December 19.  The students need to remember to wear appropriate clothes and sneakers.

As always, please let Mrs. Eckroat or Mrs. Falk know if you have any questions.
