Treehouses!

The fifth graders had a great time on Friday, September 21 creating model tree houses based off of the story “Rope Burn”!  They all used their creativity when it came to what supplies they used from home and school.  Here is just a sampling of some of the houses that could be found in fifth grade…

Parent Conferences Already!?!

Parent conference scheduling forms will be coming home to you tomorrow, Monday, October 1. These forms allow you to tell your child’s classroom teacher what day and what time frame you would prefer for your parent conference in November.

These forms are due back this coming Friday, October 5, and the teachers will be meeting on Tuesday morning, October 9 to schedule parent conferences.  It is vital that you get these forms back to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday, October 5.  If you do not, Mrs. Eckroat and Mrs. Falk will do their best but will not be able to guarantee you your first choice.

Thank you!  We are looking forward to sitting down with you in November to discuss your child’s first marking period in fifth grade.

Treehouses!

We are reading “Rope Burn” right now in reading.  This story is about a boy who learns to climb a rope with the help from a friend who has a tree house.  We discussed narrative story structure and how conflict and resolution add interest to the story through the plot events and the climax.

During school on Friday, September 21, all the students will be able to create their own smaller version of a tree house.  Today in reading, Mrs. Eckroat talked to the students about the supplies that can be brought in for the students to use to make their tree houses.

Please have your child look for supplies around the house that he/she can use to create this tree house…..shoe boxes, cereal boxes, popsicle sticks, etc….have them get creative!  They can bring craft or wood glue into school as well.  Please keep in mind that this should be a tree house that can be created in about an hour 🙂

We do not want students feeling that they need to buy things for this tree house, and we do not want them making the tree house at home.   It will be an afternoon of creativity and fun in fifth grade!

Students may begin bringing their supplies into school starting on Monday.  Any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Eckroat or Mrs. Falk.

Figuratively Speaking

The fifth grade has been starting the year in reading with a discussion on figurative language.  We have been discussing similes, metaphors, personification, idiom, and proverbs/adages.  The students were challenged to look for figurative language in their Daily Reading books and write examples on our “graffiti wall.”    Well, it didn’t take them long to fill it!

We will continue doing this all year, and it be exciting to see how many different examples they can find!
