ATTENTION MRS. APPEL’S AND MISS RILEY’S CLASS!

We are so excited to announce that we are going to have a class google meet tomorrow! This may get a little crazy having so many people together, but here are some tips!

Below is a google meet link. If you are using the computer to connect, please click on the link below. There is also a dial up option, with a PIN number to enter when prompted if you are using your phone for audio only. Please hover at the bottom of the screen and turn your microphone off by clicking on the microphone icon. When you want to speak, please turn it back on by clicking the icon again. Turning the mic off when the teacher is speaking helps from the distraction of background noise. Each child will get a turn to talk and ask any questions they may have.

I do have some important updates for parents concerning completion and turn in procedures for remote learning activities, so we are asking that a parent or adult be in the room when we are meeting. Our meeting topics will then be posted on the blog.

WE CANNOT WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL!! OUR GOOGLE MEET IS TOMORROW, THURSDAY, APRIL 9 AT 2:00 PM! SEE YOU THEN!!!!

Love,

Mrs. Appel and Miss Rile

Looking forward to seeing work from you!

Dear Kiddos,

Today ends the first round of our assignments of review material. I hope you have fun today listening to The Hula Hoop Queen and I can’t wait to see some pictures of the beginning, middle, and end ! It’s also really important to talk and learn about fire safety with your family, as we are doing in social studies today!

I miss you very much!

Mrs. Appel

Report cards will be available soon!

As you review your child’s report card, please note the topics covered over the third marking period. Thanks!

April 3, 2020

Dear Families,

Below are lists of concepts we have covered over the third marking period. Remember that if your child’s grade has changed, it may be in part due to the curriculum covering different topics and becoming more challenging. As always, please do not hesitate to email with any questions or concerns.

                                                                      Sincerely,

Cristen Appel

Reading/ Phonics Topics

Retelling using beginning, middle, and end

Finding the main idea and details

Reading words with long vowels (ex: sleep, mean, tide, came…)

Finding the Problem and Solution of a story

Discussing the Author’s purpose – Informative, entertainment, or persuasion

Writing Topics

Students are working to create multi sentence stories on the following topics with a main idea and several supporting details: narrative writing and informational writing

We are working on the editing process and checking for spelling, correct use of (. , ! , ? ).

Checking for neat handwriting.

Our biggest challenge in writing longer stories and informational pieces has been to use periods and capital letters correctly. Many students use capitals and punctuation appropriately when writing one or two sentences, but often forget as the writing gets longer.

Math

Hundreds, tens, and ones place value

Greater than and less than

Adding groups of ten

Identifying numbers to 120

Adding double and single digit numbers.

Science

Force and Motion

Light/ Heat/ the Sun

Learning Activities are Available Today!

Hello Penn Manor families,

Penn Manor educators have developed continuity of education plans to help students continue learning from home while our schools are closed.

Here is a link to the resources.

These are optional, ungraded learning activities that students can complete from home. The resources have been developed to meet a variety of students’ needs and may not be the same across our school district.

Teachers will also be accessible to students and parents and will respond to any questions about the learning activities in a timely manner.

Currently, schools are scheduled to reopen on April 9th, but that date may change depending on Governor Wolf’s orders.

Thank you for your support of your child’s education in this challenging time.

Good Afternoon Families

It was so nice being able to connect via phone with a lot of you over the past few days.  Miss Riley and I called all our families to check in and give some updates to you.  If we did not get a hold of you, then I probably left a voicemail, and you can gladly email me if you want us to try calling you again tomorrow.  I am going to post some highlights down below if you need help…

**Starting on Monday afternoon the district will have Optional learning activities for students to access by grade level on a Penn Manor district homepage. There will be a first grade folder with some optional activities that first grade teachers across the district have gathered for your child to do at home for seven days.  Please do not access this until noon on Monday as the district is working to put this page together. Please know they are fun review concepts for reading, writing, math, and content areas and feel free to send a picture of your child work. (If you have questions once posted on Monday, please let us know)

**Also we wanted to make sure that you are signed up for the Hambright Blog as that will be the primary means of communication for the Hambright school.  (If you need to subscribe for notifications, go to the Penn Manor website, select school on the top right and choose Hambright, under the parent tab there is a subscribe to blog link.

**Report cards: On the Hambright blog, they have posted reminders for parents to obtain a Sapphire account so they can review student grades, attendance, etc. We will be distributing our third marking period report cards for grades 1-6 through the parent portal. Simply click here and follow the directions to obtain this account. If you have already done so, then great.  Next week you should be able to view your child’s report card on Sapphire;  information will be posted on the school blog when available.

**Last but not least, I appreciate your flexibility and support as we are working from home to help your child.  We do not know what the future holds but we want to be here to help.  I hope you have all received an invite to the Class Tag parent/teacher communication app.  This is new for me but I have heard good things and would like to be able to try a quick source/connection with all of you.  So you can just click on the link in your email invite and get added to our Class Tag.  There is an easy and free app on your phone too.  So I will be using it like our class blog communication as in posting announcements, newsletter/reminders, and feel free to message us directly through the app.  The Class Tag is only set up for our class to view and participate.  Miss Riley will be responding and posting throughout the next few days as well.

We miss you and we truly miss our classroom family. Please know that we are thinking of you and hope to see you as soon as possible! – Cristen Appel and Shayla Riley
