Language Arts  topics of the week-

• words containing: r controlled vowels (/ur/, /ir/, /or/)
• adding -er and -est to words ( longer, longest)

Writing :

We continue to work on oranizing our stories into four sections:

First, Next, Then, Last

Math:

We are working on classifying numbers as greater than or less than and using symbols to do so. ( < > =)

We will have a short quiz on tens and ones place value and greater than and less than this WEDNESDAY.

After our quiz we will work on numbers to 120.

Science:

We are working on forces of motion such as push and pull.

Social Studies:

Mr. Schuck is teaching us about our feelings and ways to cooperate and work together.

The kids love watching these videos to help them learn new math concepts. Jack Hartman has a variety of songs! Check out these for some current math goals!

Tonight two important papers are coming home. I am excited to tell you that we began ABC Mouse in our classroom. Your child has the opportunity to use it at home as well. Information on how to access ABC Mouse at home is coming home tonight in your child’s take home folder. Also in tonight’s folder you will find the at home password and information to log into Xtra Math for math practice if you have not already done so. Please take advantage of this free website to help your first grader become faster and more accurate in their basic facts.

Also… tomorrow we will have book exchange and will have book exchange every other day B. We no longer have library class due to applied engineering, but we will continue to exchange books.

Spelling Test, Friday January 26

Literacy Topics

We are learning and practicing the following:

• adding -s or -es to a word
• doubling consonants when adding -ed or-ing ( ex: stopping, stopped)

Writing : We are working on the following big ideas in writing :

• Sequencing: First, Next, Then, Last
• Personal Narrative: True stories about an event beginning with “I”

Math

We continue to work on tens and ones …

• counting by 10, dimes
• introducing counting by 5’s , nickels
• greater than and less than

As you can see we have a busy week ahead of us!

Just a reminder…. this week is now a full week due to our snow days. Below is our list of spelling words for Friday.

School will not be in session on Monday, January 15 or Tuesday, January 16.

Math News – This week we will continue to work on place value. Our Check for Understanding quiz will be on Friday.

Science –  This week is full of fun experiments in science including learning about friction and speed. We will also keep learning about the differences in pushes and pulls.

Social Studies- Mr. Shuck will be joining our class for social skills lessons Monday and Friday. We look forward to working with him!

This week we will not be having a spelling test. Students will be bringing home flashcards with practice words on them for the skills we are reviewing and practicing this week.
