Update: Math Quiz

After looking at our math schedule and talking with Mrs. Wright, we will be moving up our first math quiz for this chapter. Mrs. Wright plans to quiz on Wednesday. My class will take the quiz on Wednesday or Thursday. I will know better after our pre-test tomorrow.

Week Five

Our Week

Math – This week we finished Chapter 2. We will start Chapter 3: Subtraction on Monday. Students will explore a variety of topics, including subtracting mentally, estimating differences, and subtracting 3 and 4-digit numbers.

Mad Minutes are due on Monday!

Reading – This week we read the story, Schools Around the World.

We also practiced locating information in a book. The students used classroom books to find a glossary, index, title page, caption, and photographs.

Writing – We are focusing on paragraph writing. The students have been learning how to write a BOLD Beginning. Next up? MIGHTY Middles.

Grammar – We have learned that a complete sentence needs a subject and predicate. We also talked about how we can take two simple sentences and combine them to make a compound sentence. Do you remember the “Conjunction Junction” video from way back in the day? We watched it! It never gets old. 🙂

Social Studies – This past week, we learned about how to use a map scale to find the actual distance between locations on a map. We also started to talk about lines of Latitude and Longitude. We will have a quiz on Tuesday. For the quiz, the students will be asked to locate the Equator, Prime Meridian, and the Northern, Southern, Eastern, & Western hemispheres on a globe/map.

Week 4

Our Week

Math: We are about halfway through Chapter 2: Addition. Our Chapter Test will be on Friday.  It is important that the students understand the difference between the three addition properties: Commutative, Associative, and Identity.

Commutative – Think about commuting to work. You drive from home to work and then work to home, but the distance is the same. Ex. 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 3 = 8

Associative – Think about associating with friends. If we have a group of three friends, sometimes two of the friends spend time together, but the friendship is the same. Ex. (4 + 2) + 3 = 9, 4 + (2 + 3) = 9

Identity – Think about the zero as a mirror. The other addend looks into the zero/mirror and sees its own identity. Ex. 3 + 0 = 3

Mad Minutes are due on Monday!

Reading: This week we read the story, The Day Eddie Met the Author.

Grammar: We have been learning about subjects and predicates.

Writing: We just completed our first writing project. I hope you had a chance to check out our “selfies” at Meet the Teacher!

Social Studies: This week we learned about Cardinal and Intermediate directions. We also discovered how using a map key or legend helps us locate things on a map. Make sure your child is studying the continents and oceans and knows his/her home address.

Aleah, I “Mustache” you if you liked being our “Owl-Standing” Student
