Merry Christmas!

With all of the craziness that comes with the week before Christmas, it is easy to get overwhelmed. The days can definitely seem long and exhausting. However, when I get to come home and look at all of these sweet faces, I can’t help but to smile. I just LOVE this crazy, silly, loud, loving group of kids. Thank you to everyone who helped to make our class Christmas party such a fun event. Merry Christmas!

Week of December 11, 2017

Our Week

Math – We finished Chapter 8 and will take our test on Monday. One of the skills that the students learned was how to decompose a large factor into two smaller factors. For example, instead of trying to solve 12 x 8, they would decompose the 12 into a 10 and a 2 and then multiply 10 x 8 and 2 x 8 (these are easier factors to work with because third graders are great at skip counting by these numbers) and then add the products.

ELA – Reading was all about author’s purpose…PIE! We talked about how authors write for many reasons, but three of those reasons are to persuade, inform, and entertain. We practiced determining author’s purpose at the “PIE Cafe”. The students worked in teams to read passages and decide why they were written. As a reward for their hard work, we ended the lesson with a fun game of Pie Face! I have looked at these pictures over and over this weekend and just laughed and smiled.

Content – The students shared the posters that they created about famous people from Lancaster County. They also researched and created a brochure about a well-known location in Lancaster County.

Week of December 4, 2017

Our Week

Math – The third graders are doing an amazing job with multiplication and division. Last week we learned our 6, 7, 8 and 9 facts. There are a lot of really cool patterns in the 9 facts. Make sure to ask your third grader to show you!

ELA – In writing, we had a sweet time revising our writing. We learned how to use our five senses (and a candy cane!) to make our writing more interesting. In guided reading, we are finishing up our current chapter books. We hope to finish by Christmas break, so that we can start our new books in January.

Content – This past week we learned a lot about the history of Lancaster County. We learned that it was the Susquehannock Indians who came here first. We also started a poster and presentation project. The students are working in pairs/groups to teach us more about a famous person from Lancaster County. Next week we will learn about some famous places in Lancaster.

Spelling – We took the Lesson 12 test on Friday, and the new list was sent home. Our Lesson 13 test will be on the 15th.

This week we started our “12 Days of Kindness”. Each day we will do something nice for someone. It may be a card to thank them for everything that they do for us, or it could be as simple as holding the door for someone.

Christmas Around the World – The kids continued to work together to learn more about how their assigned country celebrates Christmas or another December holiday.

Week of November 28, 2017

Our Week

Math – We finished Chapter 7 and will begin Chapter 8 on Monday. In Chapter 8 we will learn our 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12 facts.

ELA – Ask your child to give you the SCOOP on main idea! As we learned about main idea and supporting details, we used an ice cream cone to represent the main idea and scoops of ice cream for the supporting details. Two lucky kids will earn an ice cream treat for correctly identifying the main idea and supporting details in a passage that we read on Friday. Yum! In grammar, we are still learning all about nouns. In writing, we used holiday themed sentences to practice revising and editing.

Spelling – The Lesson 11 test was on Friday. The Lesson 12 list was sent home and will be tested this coming Friday.

Last week we also started learning about how Christmas and other winter holidays are celebrated around the world.

I love when my third graders read aloud to the class!
