The Week of 11/29…

I hope everyone had a relaxing few days off! It is hard to believe December is upon us! It is also hard to believe that there are only 33 days left in 2016!

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

In Math…we will be finishing our Chapter 4 tests on Tuesday. On Wednesday and for the rest of the week, we will be working on Chapter 5 of our math curriculum. In this Chapter, students will be learning how to round, add, and subtract decimals. As always, we will be working in our stations! Please note* Students receive math homework every night except on days they have a test or Fridays. If your child forgets to bring home their math homework for the night, you can always access the math book online at https://connected.mcgraw-hill.com! Please email me if you have any trouble logging in or accessing curriculum content.

In Social Studies…we will be continuing our assignment on Slavery and reviewing for our assessment for this unit. We will have our 13 Colonies Test on Friday, December 2nd. Students will be given a study guide on Wednesday. Monday will be our last day of Social Studies. My homeroom students will begin going to 5-P for their next Science Unit.

In Spelling…Lesson 10 spelling is a review of Lessons #6-9. Lesson 10 spelling packets were passed out on Friday, November 18. Packets are  due on Friday, December 2nd.

In Reading…we will continue with Lesson 10 in our Story town curriculum this week. This story is a Reader’s Theater with a focus skill of sequencing. Students will be split up into 4 groups and will be assigned roles for this play. Each group will create props and perform in front of their peers. Reader’s Theater is a wonderful way to practice reading fluency and expression! We will have our vocab assessment for this lesson on Thursday, December 1st.  This week is the start of Guided Reading! Students will be divided into three reading groups, based on their reading needs. Each group will be assigned a chapter book. Each group will be pulled for 15 minute sessions with the teacher to discuss and reflect on the novel they are reading. We will focus on comprehension, vocabulary, and reading fluency during our guided reading time each day. Guided reading will run from Monday to Thursday of each week (Fridays will be allotted for grammar and spelling)

This week students will begin reading “A Dog’s Life”, “Kid in the Red Jacket”, and “Island of the Blue Dolphin”.

Reminders:

  • Winter is sneaking up on us! Please remind your children to bring winters coats, hats, and gloves to school. Mr. Malek reminded the students last week that if the weather is NOT below freezing and it is sunny, students will go outside to recess. BRRRR!!!
  • We will have a fire drill on Tuesday, November 29th.

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s class on Monday and Tuesday of this week….

In Math…we will be reviewing for our Chapter 4 math test on Monday and taking our test on Tuesday.

In Social Studies…we will be learning about Slavery in the 1600’s and 1700’s and the Middle Passage. Students will be using Close Reading strategies to read articles on this time period and complete reflection assignments pertaining to slavery.

In Spelling…Lesson 10 spelling is a review of Lessons #6-9. Lesson 10 spelling packets were passed out on Friday, November 18. Packets are not due until Friday, December 2nd because of break.  (These spelling words will be the same next week.)

In Reading…we will be finishing up our text dependent analysis for Lesson 9 and starting Lesson 10. We will review Robust Vocabulary and preview the Reader’s Theater for this lesson on Tuesday.

REMINDERS:

  • Thanksgiving Break is from Wednesday, November 23rd to Monday, November 28th. School will resume on Tuesday, November 29th.
  • Our Shine Time Assembly will take place on Tuesday, November 22nd at 2:30pm.
  • We will have our Emergency Evacuation Drill on Tuesday, November 29th.

 

 

The Week of November 14th…

It was so great meeting all of my student’s parents this week at our conferences. It brings me so much joy teaching your child everyday, and your child would not be as successful as he/she was in Marking Period 1 without YOUR support. Thank you so very much for all that you do as a parent. 🙂

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

In Math…we will be starting Chapter 4 and learning how to estimate quotients with 2 digit divisors, we will learn how to divide a 2 digit number by up to a 3 digit number, we will learn how to adjust the quotient, and we will learn how to divide greater numbers by multi-digit divisors. The students will be given a quiz on Wednesday that will check their progress for lessons 1 through 3. Like always, we will work in math stations this week, reiterating our current lesson of the day, the previous lesson from the day before, and basic math fact practice.

In Social Studies…we will be continuing our discussion on the 3 Regions of the 13 Colonies and completing a poster project in pairs. We will learn the difference between an Indentured Servant and a Slave in colonial times and complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two categories. We will have a 3 Regions Quiz on Thursday. A study guide will be sent home on Tuesday.

In Spelling…the students were given their Lesson 9 spelling packets on Friday November 11th. We will be having our spelling test on Friday November 18th. Our spelling words are….

congress, English, fortress, expression, conclude, complain, complex, distrust, contribute, explode, umbrella, merchandise, remembrance, concrete, goggles, portray, technique, accomplish, function, membrane

As always, I recommend that students study these words throughout the week in order to be prepared for the test at the end of the week.

In Reading…we will be reading our Lesson 9 story this week “Leonardo’s Horse”. We will work on sequencing for this story and learn more about Leonardo Da Vinci and his many accomplishments throughout his life. We will be practicing our Robust Vocabulary that goes along with this lesson, completing a genre study on narrative non-fiction, and working on narrative paragraph writing. We will have our Lesson 9 test on Thursday and Friday of this week. The test will include an assessment of comprehension, focus skill, vocabulary, and writing.

In Grammar…we will be learning the difference between dependent and independent clauses in complex sentences.

REMINDERS:

  • Picture Retake Day is Tuesday, November 15th.
  • Penn Manor Food Drive will end on November 18th. 5th graders are asked to bring in canned cranberry sauce for families in need. We will keep a tally of the total amount of cans we have as a class! So far, we have 3 cans! Keep em’ coming!
  • November 14th- PTO meeting at 6:30pm
  • November 23rd to 28th- Thanksgiving Break

The Week of November 7th…

Marking Period 1 has officially ended and it is that time of the year where we get to sit down together and talk about your child’s progress. I am very eager to meet with all of you! In the meantime, here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

In Math… this week we will be reviewing for and taking our Chapter 3 test (on Tuesday). We will begin Chapter 4, where we will learn how to divide a 2 digit by an up to 4 digit number.

In Social Studies…we will be learning about the three regions of the 13 colonies: New England, Middle Region, and Southern Region. We will be learning the similarities and differences of each region and how they prospered as colonies. (We have content on Monday and Tuesday, however due to the early dismissal schedule we will NOT be having content Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.)

In Spelling…our test will be Friday, November 11th. Our words this week are…

entire, hospital, combine, public, chimney, golden, survive, turmoil, absorb, journey, wisdom, whisper, identify, pretzel, establish, capture, furnace, nursery, marvelous, condition

Students will be given their Lesson 9 packets on Friday.

In Reading…we will continue Lesson 8 “When Washington Crossed the Delaware” and end our unit with a Reader’s Theater on Thursday. On Friday, we will begin lesson 9 with the introduction to Robust Vocabulary and continuing reviewing our focus skill, sequencing.

In Grammar…we will continue to identify prepositions and prepositional phrases in sentences.

*On early dismissal days, we have ELA in the morning and Math in the afternoon*

REMINDERS:

  •  You will be receiving your child’s report card at your scheduled conference with me.
  • Our day for the PTO Book Fair will be on Wednesday November 9th during special (10:35 to 11:20)
  • 11/9, 11/10, and 11/11 are early dismissal (1:30pm)
  • November 11th- PTO Grandparent Bingo Night at Manor Church from 6:00 to 7:15
  • November 14th- PTO meeting at 6:30pm
  • November 23rd to 28th- Thanksgiving Break
