The Week of 12/19…

I hope all of you enjoy a relaxing and healthy holiday break! Your children have been working so hard this school year and they all truly deserve a vacation! Thank you for being such a supportive and important part in your child’s education.  See you in 2017!!

Here is the what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

In Math…this week in math we will be learning how to multiply decimals by decimals, multiply decimals by the powers of ten, and use the Commutative, Associative, and Identity properties to multiply mentally. Students will have a “Check my Progress” quiz on Tuesday for lessons 1-5.

In Social Studies….Mrs. Purzycki’s students will learn about the 3 regions of the 13 colonies while doing various activities to learn about each region’s economy, diversity, climate, land formation, and colonies. They will end their week by creating a poster depicting one of the regions in partners.

In Spelling…we will be working on Lesson 13 this week. Packets are due on Friday 12/23. Our test will be on Friday 12/23 as well. Please remind your child that in addition to completing their spelling packets, they should also be studying their words each night. The spelling lists are becoming more and more challenging each week! If your child is looking for additional practice, please visit for fun spelling games for our Lesson 13 list.

In Reading…we will be finishing up our lesson 12 story “The Ultimate Field Trip” with a Text Dependent Analysis (TDA). We will also take our comprehension test on this story on Wednesday. We will be previewing our new story (A Drop of Water) at the end of the week. Our focus skill for Lesson 14 is Cause and Effect.


-We have early dismissal on Friday 12/23 (1:30pm)

-Shine time will be on Friday (Carol Singing) at 10:30am.

-On Thursday, 12/22, it is Holiday Hat Day! If your child would like to wear a holiday hat to school, they will need to donate 25 cents to the student council. Please refrain from having them wear hats that make noise or light up.


The Week of 12/12…

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

In Math…we will be reviewing for our chapter 5 test on Monday and taking it on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will be starting Chapter 6 on Thursday. This week we will be learning how to estimate the products of whole numbers and decimals and learn how to multiply whole numbers by decimals.

In Social Studies…my homeroom students will be going to Mrs. Purzycki’s  class to start their Unit 2 in Science this week. Their unit will be on different types of energy. I will be welcoming Mrs. Purzycki’s class to learn about the 13 colonies. This week, my students will be learning about the first settlement in America, the differences between life back then and life today, and begin learning about the three regions of the 13 colonies at the end of the week. *Note: On Wednesday 12/14, my homeroom students will not have science as they will be participating in our yearly dentist lesson.

In Spelling…Lesson 12 spelling words will be tested on Friday, 12/16. Students received their spelling packets on Friday, 12/9. Spelling packets are also due on 12/16. The spelling words for this week are…

In Reading…we will continue working on Lesson 12 in our Storytown curriculum “Ultimate Field Trip”. Our focus skill this week is comparing and contrasting. We will be taking our vocabulary test on Wednesday. On Friday, students will be creating their own ultimate field trip!


-We will have our buddy lesson this Thursday with our 2nd grade class.

-Christmas Break begins on December 24th. School resumes on January 3rd.

The week of 12/5…

I don’t know about you but I am really getting into the Holiday Spirit! We have 3 full weeks of school until Christmas Break but the holidays will be here and over before we know it!



Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

In Math…we will take a quiz on Monday on lessons 1-3 (rounding and adding decimals), learn about the different addition properties, learn how to subtract decimals, and work on word problems within this chapter. We will review on Friday and take our Chapter 5 test next week.

In Social Studies…instead of Social Studies this week (since we finished our unit last week, graded tests will be in Friday Folders this week) we will work on a unit of writing . We will learn how to write a persuasive/opinion pieces. We will learn about different persuasion strategies, how to choose a topic, hooks, and supporting details. Towards the end of the week, students will write a persuasive piece on a topic of their choice (example-why soccer is the best sport to play or why dogs are the best pet to have)

In Spelling…Lesson 11 spelling words will be tested on Friday December 9th. Packets were sent home on Friday, December 2nd. Like always, packets are due on the same day of the test.

In Grammar…we will be working on identifying fragments and run ons in sentences.

In Reading…we will be starting Lesson 11/12 within our Storytown curriculum this week. We will be learning 14 vocabulary words and I will introducing a new focus skill this week; comparing and contrasting. We will be reading “The Ultimate Field Trip” throughout the week.  We will also continue with guided reading. Our groups will be reading “The Kid in the Red Jacket”, “Island of the Blue Dolphin”, and “The Artic Ocean”.  Each student is assigned a “job” to complete with each section of the book. The students will present their jobs during our guided reading small group discussions.


December 6th: Holiday Concert @2:30pm and @7:30pm
