It is hard to believe we welcomed Fall at the end of last week when we had summer like temps this weekend! I am ready for the cooler weather….!

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s class this week…

The Week of 9/18…

It was so great meeting my student’s families on Thursday! Thank you for coming. For those who could not make it, I look forward to meeting you at conferences in November!

We have a full five day week in fifth grade (try saying that 10 times fast!) Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s class this week…

In Math… we are continuing with Chapter 2. This week we will practice our math problem solving skills by making math tables, use the distributive property to solve multiplication problems mentally,  estimate products by using rounding and compatible numbers,  and multiply up to a three digit number by one and two digit numbers. On Tuesday, my math class will be given a Chapter 2 quiz that will cover prime factorization and exponents (objectives they learned last week).  (Remember, my homeroom students may no longer be my math students because we switched!  All of the 5th grade teachers try to stay on the same lesson schedule with our math curriculum, however it may not be exactly the same as what I am teaching!) Homework this week will be Spiral Review!

In Social Studies… we will finish our unit on the 13 Colonies this week! We will learn about how slavery started and continued within the Southern Region, learn more about the Mayflower Compact, and review for our assessment. Our 13 Colonies Unit Assessment will be on Friday 9/22. Students will receive a study guide on Tuesday!

*On Monday 9/25, my homeroom students will go to Mrs. Purzycki’s class for their first unit in Science during content time!

In Grammar…we will learn how to identify compound predicates in sentences this week.

In ELA…we will finish Theme 2 (“Line Drive”) on Tuesday. We will have our vocab assessment on Monday and our focus skill and comprehension assessments on Tuesday. We will begin Theme 3 ( “Chang and the Bamboo Flute”) on Wednesday and be introduced to a new set of vocab words as well as a new focus skill! Our focus skill for the next two themes will be Character’s Motives (the reasons the character acts as he or she does in a story). Our new vocab words will be desperately, sneered, urgently, indignantly, pried, and grudgingly.

In Spelling…Spelling Packets for Lesson 3 are due this Friday 9/22. Our test will also be this Friday 9/22.  The spelling list is activated on spelling city so please encourage your children to study their words through this website (if they have access to a computer at home) This is a fun and interactive way to learn their spelling words.

Our spelling words for this week are…..counter, fraud, oyster, appoint, drawn, awning, laundry, feud, shawl, jewel, royalty, powder, annoying, cashew, scoop, bamboo, browse, ointment, rooster, rescue

CHALLENGE LIST: On Friday, I began my challenge list procedures for lesson 3. After every spelling test on Fridays from now on- I will give all of my students a pretest for the next week’s words. If a student gets 18 or more words correct on their pretest, they will qualify for a challenge list and will automatically receive a 100% on their spelling test for that set of words for that week (why test them on words they already know!) The students who are on my challenge list (with parent signature) will be tested on Friday for those challenge words. If students receive a 100% on their challenge test, they will go on my SUPER SPELLER WALL! (If students do not get a 100% on their challenge test, they will still receive a 100% on their “normal” spelling test) Hope this makes sense! Please email me if you have questions!

In Writing…we will continue to  work on what “one good paragraph” looks like through a “pick a prompt” activity that is based off of our Theme 2 story this week. We will complete these writing prompts using our laptops and turn our assignments in through Google Classroom!

Our Back to School Night Videos….

In preparation for Back to School Night, the students in my class wrote letters to their parents/guardians thanking them for attending back to school night. They wrote about what they liked about 5th grade so far as well as some goals they have for themselves this year.

BUT WAIT….they didn’t stop there! Because we all have 1:1 laptops in 5th grade, not only did they write  letters, they also created videos for their parents reading what they wrote! We used an application called CHEESE. All of the videos turned out so great! A lot of my student’s parents were able to view these videos last night at Back to School Night, however if you did not get a chance to come or would like to watch your child’s video again…I have created a You Tube Channel that includes all of our videos! Check it out……!!

(To get to the list of videos…choose the “playlist” icon  in the top lefthand corner of the first video below)  The videos are named by each student’s first name 🙂

The Week of 9/11…
