The Week of 2/26…

We had so much fun last week discussing careers! On Wednesday, we had 12 different professionals come in, ranging from veterinarians to naturalists, discussing their careers and pathways to the students. We were able to meet Mr. Beaver, an insurance agent, Mr. Mellinger, a physicians assistant, Mrs. Books, a cruise line manager, and Mr. Riesinger, the Director of Technology for PMSD.  On Friday, we had “Kids at Work Day” where students dressed up as their future careers. What an important topic to discuss. It was a great week! Here is a picture of my class learning about Mrs. Book’s career!

Kids At Work Day is this Friday!

Kids at Work Day is on Friday, February 23rd, 2018!

As a way to promote career exploration and awareness with our elementary students, Penn Manor elementary schools are planning a special day across the district.

On Friday, February 23, 2018 students will be invited to wear clothing that represents careers that they may be interested in exploring as an adult. For example, your child may come dressed as a construction worker, a doctor, a teacher, etc. Please make sure that your child’s clothing is appropriate for a day of learning and wouldn’t distract other students in his/her classroom.  As an added component to Kids at Work Day, teachers and staff will be wearing their college, military, trade-school, or past/present career attire.

Our hope is that Kids at Work Day will be a great way to start conversations at home and at school about different types of careers, why someone chooses a career, and what kind of training/schooling is needed to get started in a particular career.  To help facilitate discussion at home regarding career development, please refer to the “additional resources” at the end of this post for some fun, age-appropriate career development activities.

At Penn Manor High School, about sixty-eight percent of our students attend two-year or four-year colleges. Fifty percent go to four-year colleges, and eighteen percent go to two-year colleges. About seven percent of our students go directly into the military, and about ten percent go on to one-year certificate or training programs. Fifteen percent go directly into the workforce. About twenty-two percent attend the CTC each year to gain a year of Technical Education during their senior year of high school to study fields such as: Residential Carpentry; Heavy Equipment Operator; Protective Services; Sports Medicine; Medical Assisting; Diesel Mechanics; Automotive Mechanics; Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning; Large Animal Production; Dental Assisting; Plumbing; and much more.

The Penn Manor Elementary School Counselors would like to thank you in advance for your support for Kids at Work Day. If you have any questions, please contact your school’s counselor.

Sincerely,

The Elementary School Counselors

The Week of 2/20…

I can’t believe February is coming to an end! Hopefully that means the snow is too? Fingers crossed 🙂

Last week, my students participated in their 2nd “Google Mystery Hangout”! In case your kiddos haven’t already told you about this awesome experience- a Google Mystery Hangout is a lesson where we video chat with another 5th grade class and try to guess where they are located in the world by asking “yes/no” questions. Each student has an assigned “job” they must complete in order to solve the mystery.  It is such a fantastic way to learn more about our country and the opportunity to work on our problem solving/team work skills! So far, we have visited Cape Elizabeth, Maine and last week we talked to students from Grapeland, Texas. They had such cool accents! Here are a few photos of my students working together in their mystery hangout this week…

This Friday, we will be video chatting with my cousin who lives in  REALLY COOL PLACE! I wonder if we will be able to  guess where she lives?

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

In Math… we will continue with Chapter 10 this week. We will learn how to divide different types of fractions. We will begin to review for our Chapter 10 assessment by the end of the week and will have our test next week 🙂

Next Monday- my homeroom kiddos will go to Mrs. Puzycki’s class for their next science unit.
