Happy New Year! 1/2 to 1/4- A Glimpse at our SHORT week!

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s class this week…

Math: Students will begin Chapter 7 in our math curriculum this week: Evaluating Expressions. We will learn how to use the order of operations (PEMDAS),  use numbers and operation symbols to write verbal phrases as numerical expressions, and will solve problems by working backwards.

ELA: We will continue to identify cause and effect relationships this week. We will play a “I have, who has” game on Wednesday as a refresher, read “A Drop of Water” and start a TDA that centers around the cause and effect of the water cycle. We will review Lesson 13 vocab words and take our assessment on Thursday for these words.

Spelling: Lesson 15 spelling packets will be handed out this Friday.  They will be due on 1/11

Writing: We will complete a writing assignment this week that focuses on identifying our 2019 “word”. The word we choose will be developed into our 2019 goal for this writing piece.

READING FAIR PROJECTS: These projects will be due Friday January 11th. Your children should be working on these at home. (If they need anything printed- they can email to me) The project will be completed using a tri fold. More info will be sent home on the Reading Fair that will be held to showcase everyone’s projects. I am so excited to see how these turn out!

12.10 to 12.14: A Glimpse at Our Week…

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s class this week…

Math: Students will continue to learn how to multiple and divide decimals this week  (Chapter 6). We will have out Chapter 6 test on Friday. This week, we will learn how to divide decimals by whole numbers, divide decimals by decimals, divide decimals by powers of ten, and spend a day reviewing.

ELA: We will continue our comparing and contrast focus skill this week and finish reading “Wading into Marine Biology”. We will be completing a Venn Diagram on the similarities and differences between the different tidal zones within the story. We will also begin a project which focuses on comparing and contrasting animals that live in the ocean. Students will choose an ocean animal and research two different species of that animal. We will be completing a writing activity with the research we conducted.   We will work on vocab posters this week and take our Lesson 12 vocab/comprehension/focus skill test on Friday.

Social Studies: Students will go to Mrs. Purzycki’s class to complete their Science Unit for MP 2 starting on Monday of this week.

Spelling: Lesson 13 spelling test will  be this Friday.  Packets are due on the the 14th as well. Go to  https://www.spellingcity.com/users/mrsodonnell007 to practice spelling words from lesson 13. These words are starting to get CHALLENGING! Be sure to encourage your children to study their words every night!

Grammar: We will identify and use commas within sentences this week.

Writing: We will complete a TDA using a short reading passage this week.

READING FAIR PROJECTS: These projects were introduced to your children last week. Their assignment includes reading a book (fictional) of their choice and creating a tri-fold with specific information included. These projects will be due after Christmas Break and the hope (along with the other 5th grade classes) is to present them to the school in a “Reading Fair” in mid January. We will have minimal time (some) to work on these during the school day. The majority of the project should be done at home.

12.3 to 12.7: A Glimpse at Our Week…

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s class this week…

Math: Students will continue to learn how to multiple and divide decimals this week  (Chapter 6). We will multiply decimals by decimals, have a “Check my Progress” quiz on Tuesday, learn how to multiply decimals by the power of tens, use the properties of multiplication to multiply decimals mentally, divide decimals by whole numbers, and end our week (Friday) with another “Check my Progress” quiz.  Busy week in math!

ELA: We will continue our comparing and contrast focus skill this week and read “Sailing Home” for the second time on Monday. We will compare our lives to the main character’s life. We will have our Lesson 11 assessment on Wednesday of this week. We will begin Lesson 12 on Thursday- “Wading into Marine Biology” with a new list of vocab words.

Social Studies:We will have our Revolutionary War Test on Tuesday! The rest of the week during this time we will focus on writing our next TDA. Science will begin next Monday (December 10th) for my students.

Spelling: Lesson 12 spelling test will  be this Friday.  Packets are due on the the 7th as well. Go to  https://www.spellingcity.com/users/mrsodonnell007 to practice spelling words from lesson 12. These words are starting to get CHALLENGING! Be sure to encourage your children to study their words every night!

Grammar: We will identify appositives within sentences this week and we will learn how to format titles.

Writing: We will use E/I time this week to begin and finish persuasive essays.
