2.25 to 3.1: A Glimpse at Our Week…

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom…

Math:  This week, we will wrap up Chapter 9. Our test will be on Friday. We will learn how to subtract mixed numbers, use fraction equivalence to subtract with renaming, and learn how to determine reasonableness (in word problems).

ELA: We will continue Lesson 18 this week by practicing how to identify main idea within non fiction and fictional texts. We will do a silk worm web quest to build our background knowledge and read “Project Mulberry”.

Social Studies: We will take our test on Wednesday and finish this unit with our Bill of Rights raps/songs. We are having a lot of fun with this project so far! My students will begin their science unit for this MP on Monday, March 4th.

Spelling: Lesson 20 will be tested on Friday 3/1. There is an extra page in the packets this week that is extra credit. Lesson 21 packets/test will be due on March 8th.

Grammar: We will identify more irregular verbs this week and contractions with NOT.

Is Winter over yet?

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

Math:  This week, we will continue Chapter 9. We will learn how to estimate the sum and differences of fractions, we will learn how to subtract unlike fractions, we will learn how to add mixed numbers, and we will use fraction equivalence to subtract with renaming .

ELA: We will finish Lesson 17 this week and begin Lesson 18 by learning about our new focus skill: Main Ideas and Supporting Details. We will also be introduced to a new set of vocab words this week. Our new story is “Project Mulberry”. We will also celebrate “Kids at Work” day by reading about different careers through non fiction texts.

Social Studies: This week we will be learning about the electoral college and the criteria to vote, run for president, senate, and the House. We will be taking a virtual tour of the White House as well! We will be getting our study guide for our government assessment on Tuesday. Our test will be NEXT Tuesday 2/26. We will also be starting our very anticipated final projects: Bill of Rights Raps!! (Don’t worry- I will be posting the final projects on my blog!)

Grammar: We will identify more irregular verbs this week.

Writing: We will finish our Lesson 17 TDAs this week.

2.11 to 2.15: A Glimpse at our Week…

Our February Character Education Theme is FRIENDSHIP! We will have a lesson on this very important theme on Wednesday!

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s classroom this week…

Math:  We started Chapter 9 last week with rounding fractions and will continue this chapter this week with adding/subtracting like fractions, adding/subtracting unlike fractions, and estimating the sums and differences of fractions. We will have a quiz on rounding fractions, adding/subtracting like fraction , and adding unlike fractions on Wednesday this week.

ELA: We will begin a new story this week “Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street” and will write a TDA. Our focus skill continues to be Making Inferences with this lesson. Our vocab assessment for lesson 17 will be on Thursday.

Social Studies: This week’s theme in Social Studies is the Bill of Rights! We will begin a poster project on the BoR and also learn about the voting process in the USA.

Spelling: Lesson 19 will be tested on Friday 2/15. Lesson 20 (review packet which means EXTRA CREDIT PAGE) spelling packets will be due Feb 15th.

Grammar: We will identify irregular verbs and contractions with NOT in them this week.

Writing: We will write out TDAs for lesson 17 and create a valentine’s fictional story playing “Roll A Story”.

Valentine’s Day Announcement :

Students may bring in Valentines for every one in the classroom if they choose (but this is NOT mandatory). If your child is bringing candy along with the valentines, please make sure its store bought and not chocolate. Any candy that is brought in will go home with the student. I will send home a class list of names at the beginning of the week. Remember- this is not mandatory- we do not have a Valentines Day Party in 5th grade but I do give them a few minutes at the end of the day on Thursday to exchange cards.

2.4 to 2.8: A Glimpse at our Week…

What a crazy weather week we had last week…let’s hope for warmer weather and a “back to normal” schedule this week!! Is it Spring yet?

Here is what is happening in Mrs. O’Donnell’s class this week…

Math:  We will continue and finish up Chapter 8 this week. We will learn how to convert fractions to decimals on Monday, which is our last lesson! On Tuesday, we will review for our test and take it on Wednesday of this week. On Thursday, we will begin Chapter 9. This week students will use number lines and benchmark fractions, such as 1/2, to round fractions. They will also add like fractions and solve word problems involving the addition of like fractions. WE WILL BE TAKING OUR MATH CDTS (from 2-3 pm) on TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY of this week!

ELA: We will reread “The School Story” (Lesson 16 ) this week. We will continue to work on making inferences (based on our background knowledge and information stated) within stories. We will also work on developing think notes in order to better comprehend what we are reading. We will take our L16 Vocab Assessment on Monday and our Comprehension and Focus Skill assessment for L16 Thursday. We will begin our L17 story with a new list of robust vocab words.

Social Studies: We will continue with our Government unit this week. We will learn about the Constitutional Articles and the Bill of Rights. We will begin a poster project on the Bill of Rights this week.

Spelling: Lesson 18 will be tested on Friday 2/8. Lesson 19 spelling packets will be due Feb 15th.

Grammar: We will identify inappropriate shifts in verb tenses and will identify irregular verbs this week. * We did not get to these lessons last week*

*We will have a dentist lesson on Tuesday (taught by a dental hygienist)

REPORT CARD ENVELOPES ARE DUE BACK BY WEDNESDAY. It is important that you sign the “MP 2” line before sending it back into school. This indicates you have received and looked at your child’s report card. Thank you for your promptness!
