Looking Back…Looking Forward…

Reading A & B- Looking Back– We have almost finished our unit on nonfiction text features and structures. We have spent time discussing strategies authors use to help readers understand nonfiction better. We worked to identify text features and explain how they enhance a text. We then practiced being authors and adding features to our writing. We practiced identifying different structures used in nonfiction texts and contrasted them to features. Looking Forward- We will continue to identify, discuss, and analyze text structure as we read and discuss the events of the Titanic and the exploration of this great ship. Students have assumed the role of a passenger on the Titanic and will be excited to discover if their passenger was a survivor. We will see some real footage of the inside of the ship as it was explored in the late 80s.

**Students will take the Unit 2 Assessment on Tuesday, 12/6.  We will then begin our next unit on identifying the main idea, supporting details and summarizing a text. We will also be preparing for a holiday reader’s theater by discussing characterization, practicing fluency and expression, and creating scenery to show the setting. *Please continue to encourage your child to be reading for at least 15 minutes each evening. This is their daily reading homework and the #1 way to improve reading skills.

Science- Looking Back- We learned how meteorologists work with large amounts of weather data and learned to interpret station models before concluding our weather unit with Mr. Polaski’s class. ** 6P will take their Weather Unit assessment on Friday, 12/2. They will begin their next Social Studies unit on 11/30 and 6F is beginning a chemistry unit in science.   Looking Forward-  6F is just beginning Chemistry.  Check the science tab to see the topics we will cover in this unit. As always, science topics are always available in Quizlet and Gimkit for a fun way to review concepts covered in class.

Writing- Looking Back-Students did a great job writing narratives on their special places and sharing them with their classmates. Grammar concepts have been taught and reviewed with our weekly mentor sentence. Looking Forward- Students will continue to practice grammar and writing skills through review of our weekly mentor sentences. They will begin writing letters to students in another country after learning a little about their culture.
