Week of October 29th

We showed a lot of great spirit last week with all of our spirit days!  Penn Manor is asking faulty, staff, and students to wear red today if possible to show support for our friends in the Warwick School District.

We have been working so hard on addition with regrouping!  We have learned how to do it with base ten blocks, by drawing models of the base ten blocks, and by writing it abstractly.  We have even applied that skill in problem solving!  We will be having the test this week and moving into subtraction with regrouping next.

The spelling list that your child brought home Friday will not be tested until Monday, November 5 due to our inservice/no school day on Friday.  A new list will not be given until that Friday and will be tested Friday, 11/9.

Second grade has been asked to donate canned corn for our food drive.

*November 5 – 9 – Fall Book Fair (The Book Fair will be open during conferences on Wednesday afternoon and evening.)

Pumpkin Project

Hello 2D families!  I wanted to clarify two things about the character pumpkin project.  This is an OPTIONAL fun project, please do not feel obligated to do it.  Also, the due date listed should say October 29, but feel free to hand it in earlier!  I am looking forward to seeing the finished products!  We will display all of second grader’s pumpkins in our hallway!  Your child will take the pumpkin home on November 1st.

Happy creating!!

Week of October 15th

I hope you are staying warm and dry out there!  It was a cold and wet morning!

If you have not returned your child’s conference paper yet, please do so as soon as possible.  We will be scheduling conferences this week and your input is important!  Thank you!

We are one handful of gems away from earning our class reward!! We will vote on what we want to do to celebrate this week!

You may have noticed that homework has looked a little different.  The strip is designed to be a spiral review of skills to keep those concepts fresh in our minds and ensure mastery by frequently practicing them.  We have been working to write in “second grade handwriting” since the beginning of school.  If your child uses appropriate sized writing, he/she should be able to write the answers in the space provided.  If, however, that is a challenge, please feel free to use a separate piece of paper and we can staple it together at school.  Thank you!  Studying spelling and reading for the reading calendar are still expected as well.  Please contact me with questions or concerns!

Also, please look in your child’s reading bag each night.  I am starting reading group homework with your child.  There is a green paper that went home in the bag.  I will assign reading homework at our group, and you need to sign the line “parent signature.”  This is for READING GROUPS only.  The minutes your child reads at home for this can count on the reading calendar as well!  Let me know if you have any questions.

Looking Ahead…

*October 23 – PTO MOD Pizza Restaurant Night

*October 28 – PTO Designer Bag Bingo at Manor Church

*November 5 – November 9 – Fall Book Fair

*November 7 – Sub sale pickup from 3-6 PM

*November 13 – Picture Retake Day (Please send in your original packet.)

Week of October 8th

Hi 2D!! Just a reminder, there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, October 8th due to the Columbus Day holiday.

New spelling words went home today.  The next spelling test will be on October 12th.  Also, a paper went home for an in school writing project.  Your child needs to think about a dog they like (or one they have).  It could be their own or it could belong to a friend or family member.  I would like your child to take some time this weekend to write some notes about this dog (with your help) on the provided paper.  Please return the paper back to school on Tuesday.  If you could, print out a picture and send it in with the report.  If you need to, you can email me the picture and I can print it at school.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Our Chapter 2 math test will be on Tuesday.  I am sending home an OPTIONAL review test for your child to complete.  We have been working hard at learning groups of, repeated addition, skip counting, and using a hundreds chart. I know the kids are ready!  Chapter 3 will be adding two digit numbers with regrouping (we learned this as carrying!)  We will do a lot of hands on to teach this so your child should be able to explain what that 1 on top really means!

This week we focused on TEAMWORK!  We created group names and our groups earned points for working together! 🙂

Week of October 1st

Hello 2D Friends! I hope you are out there enjoying this beautiful weather!

Did you sign and add up your child’s SEPTEMBER reading calendar minutes?!  These are due today but feel free to send them in tomorrow!  I can’t wait to see how many minutes our class read and add it together as a WHOLE grade! Children will get new reading calendars today for the month of October!

We had a lot of fun last week learning about Johnny Appleseed! Did your child tell you that he/she was a chef on Wednesday? We worked together to make very YUMMY applesauce! Our room smelled so good as it was cooking in the crockpot and we ate every last spoonful of the warm, sweet treat at the end of the day!

Since it is a new month, Central Manor will be focusing on a new character trait. This month we will be learning about the importance of teamwork! Stay tuned throughout the month to hear about all the ways we practice and learn about teamwork!

Your child will be bringing home a new book order. All orders are due by October 19. I am asking that orders be submitted online please. Each online order helps earn books for our classroom! Thank you for your support!

Please return your child’s emptied Friday Folder on Mondays. Thank you for signing your child’s Leader Chart/Planner each evening!

We have book exchange on Thursday! Please bring back all library books!

As the weather begins to get chillier, please be sure that your child has a sweatshirt or jacket for recess.

A spelling list came home last Thursday. The test will be this Friday. Please be sure to study! This week’s words are a bit tricky. We have been talking about the long vowel sound of “e” created with “ee” and “ea”.

Upcoming Dates to Remember:

Monday, October 8: Columbus Day – no school
Friday, October 19: K-12 early dismissal
Friday, November 2: K-12 in-service – no school

I am looking forward to a another wonderful week!
