Gingerbread Houses

I am so excited to start planning for gingerbread houses!  I think the kids will really enjoy creating colorful masterpieces, but I cannot do it without your help!  There are two ways to help, please consider donating items and/or helping to make the icing for decorating.  See below for details on both.

To donate items, please go to the following sign up genius page.  Donated items need to be sent in by Monday, Dec 17.  Thank you!!

If you would be willing to make the icing for 20 at home and send in (it will need to be refrigerated) please let me know!  I will provide all the materials you need, but a mixer is required! I am thinking I need two parent volunteers for this.  Please email me if you are interested.

If you would like to join your child for the decorating, we will be doing it on Friday, December 14 from 2:45 until 3:20.  This will be so much fun, I am so excited!

I will send home a letter with this information as well.  Thank you for your help! 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving!🦃🍁

It sounds like a lot of second graders had fun in the snow!

We will have a special Shine Time today, Monday, honoring some veterans that will be visiting Central Manor!  Students are asked to wear red, white, and blue if possible!

Although we have a short week, we will be very busy!  We will be taking our math test on Wednesday.  A great way to prepare is to encourage your child to practice double digit subtraction with and without regrouping at home.  If your child brings in that practice to show me, he/she will earn an extra credit point on our homework chart!

This week we will do some Thanksgiving activities and will do a buddy activity with Mrs. O’Donnell’s 5th grade class!

Your child’s spelling list will come home on Wednesday. The test will not be until Friday, November 30.

We have an early 1:30 dismissal on Wednesday.  There will be no school on Thursday, Friday, or Monday.  I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I truly am thankful to be your child’s teacher!!

Week of November 12

It was such a pleasure to meet with each of you for parent teacher conferences!  I truly feel so lucky to be able to spend my days with your children!!

We are still collecting canned corn for the Thanksgiving food drive.  Thank you to those that have already donated!

Spelling Lists came home on Friday!  The test will be next Friday, Nov. 16.  Also, Friday folders don’t always come home.  Keep an eye out for the red plastic folder each week, though! Thank you!

Picture retake day is on Tuesday if you are interested.  The original packet of pictures should be returned that day.

This month’s character trait Central Manor is focusing on is respect.  We will be discussing what respect looks like and sounds like this week!

We started our double digit subtraction chapter this week and will be working very hard on that next week.  Any subtraction basic fact practice that can happen at home would really benefit your child!  Thanks for the support! Again, I sent home a video to show each of you how to practice with your child!

Upcoming important dates:

12- PTO Meeting- 6:30 PM Library

13- Fall Picture Re-take Day

19- Patriotic Shine Time- Wear Red-White-Blue

21- 1:30 Early Dismissal

22-26- No School- Thanksgiving Vacation

I would like to say a very special thank you to anyone who has or is currently serving our country!  Happy Veteran’s Day!

A special note from Mr. Malek and Mrs. Transue:

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Research suggests that a positive school climate can support student success.

This year, Central Manor Elementary School has again decided to gather data on students’, staff, and parents’ perceptions of the school climate. This data will help the school leadership team and staff continue to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement.

Please let us know what you think by completing an anonymous survey at:

When you reach the survey website, please look for the “CLICKING HERE” hyperlink near the top of the web page.

Invitation Code  BYTRD1

The survey will be open until Friday, November 16, 2018.  We plan to have several locations set up throughout the school on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 during parent/teacher conferences.  Please look for a computer in the office, downstairs lobby by the playground doors, and/or in the beach area in or K-2 wing of the building.  Another option is to complete this survey at home on your personal computer.

Please help us improve the school climate by taking 5-10 minutes to complete this survey.   Families with multiple students, please take this survey one time only.  If you choose to complete the survey, please send in a brief note to the office stating you did so.  Your name will be entered into a random drawing to win gift cards to local stores.  Several winners will be chosen.

Week of November 5th

Hello 2D Families!

The Book Fair is open this week!  Students may bring money or just browse.  Our class will visited today from 1:55-2:40.  If your child did not bring money, he or she made a wish list! The Book Fair will also be open to parents during parent/teacher conferences.

The spelling test was today (11/5)  for the “ar” words.  There will not be a new spelling list for this week.  I will be giving out the next list this Friday which will be tested the following Friday (11/16).

This week we will be adding up all of the minutes from our October reading calendars.  I am so impressed with the amazing reading going on at home!  Thank you for encouraging such a wonderful habit at home!!  Our top three readers from our class will be announced sometime this week and we will see what our second grade combined minutes will be!  Will will beat last month’s minutes???

In math, we will start SUBTRACTION with regrouping!  To help your child at home, please practice his or her basic subtraction facts!  Flash cards are a great way to do this.  The quicker and more fluent your child is with these facts, the easier it will be for him/her to solve these problems!  I will send a short video sometime this week showing you how we explain “subtraction regrouping” at school. You may remember this in school as “borrowing!”

Due to parent teacher conferences, there will be 1:30 dismissals on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week.

I am really looking forward to meeting with you this week to discuss your child’s progress.  I will do my best to stay on time, but if it is your conference time and my door is still closed, please know I will be with you as soon as possible.  Sometimes with sibling conferences on the other side of the building, conference times are thrown off.  Thank you for your patience!  If you need a reminder time of when your conference is, please send me an email and I will let you know!
