TOMORROW, April 14th at 10 a.m., we will be having a virtual class meeting just to say hello and to see what everyone has been up to! Please e-mail me if you need another invitation to the meeting, I sent an invitation out to all e-mail addresses I have currently. I’m really looking forward to “seeing” everyone!

LEAVE YOUR MARK AT HOME HAMBRIGHT LEADERS!! — This year, Hambright leaders learned about and began leaving their MARK each day!  Though we have gone to online learning, the year is not over yet. Leaders, we want you to continue to Make good choices, Act kindly, Respect yourself and others, and Keep being your best.  

Parents/Guardians:  We want to know when your sons and daughters are leaving their MARK at home.  Let us know by emailing me at jessica.hoke@pennmanor.net  Please include: the student’s name, grade level, date, and a description of how he/she was seen leaving a MARK at home. 

Here is an example: Talia Jones Grade 4  4/13/2020 — When Talia woke up, she asked her mom how she could help out around the house during the day.

It is as simple as that! Students who earn Virtual Leader Tickets by leaving a MARK at home will get a shoutout on the Hambright blog. Woohoo!!

I have to say the highlight of my week was calling and talking to all of you! I miss you all so very much. I was very saddened by the news from Governor Wolf yesterday. However; I am still here for all of you and we will continue to communicate each week, it will just be a little different. We will all be taking this one step at a time, together.

I sent out an invite to the Epic reading website to everyone who has provided me with an e-mail address. This is a really cool website where you can read stories, listen to stories, watch short videos and other fun things! I am able to see what you are reading and I can also make book recommendations to you. This is just another fun way to incorporate reading into your schedule. This is a completely optional program! 🙂

As you finish projects or assignments, please feel free to take pictures and send them my way via e-mail. I LOVE seeing what you’re up to!

I am available through e-mail and will respond within 24 hours during our typical school week. I also have set “office hours” each day where I will respond immediately to any e-mails. For this upcoming week (4/13 – 4/17) my office hours will be as following:

• Monday 4/13: 2 – 3 p.m.
• Tuesday 4/14: 9 – 10 a.m.
• Wednesday 4/15: 2 – 3 p.m.
• Thursday 4/16: 9 – 10 a.m.
• Friday 4/17: 9 – 10 a.m.

I officially return to teaching on Monday, April 6th. Although it will be in little different way, I am super excited to be back! Miss Itzhaki filled me in on how awesome you all were during your time with her. Again, I can’t tell you how happy I am to be back, although it has been a wonderful 10 weeks with our little girl, Charlotte Rose. I hope you all are staying safe and well! I am posting a picture of Charlotte that will hopefully bring a smile to your face. 🙂

Good morning!

This is our first full week back after break! Tomorrow, we will have our lesson 13 spelling test. I know the students haven’t had as much time to study for these words, but we have also been practicing them in class a lot! In math, we began a new chapter on subtraction. I always tell the students we have to switch off our “addition brains” and flip on our “subtraction brains.” It’s tough to make that transition and it has been taking some practice, but we are getting there! Their test on this chapter won’t be for awhile, so we will be able to get a lot of practice in. In ELA, we have began to write paragraphs and will be practicing editing and proofreading.

This week marks the end of the 2nd marking period, which also means we are half way through our school year together – that is hard to believe!

Just a few reminders for this week:

• Due to the limited time we have in school until winter break, I am going to have Scholastic Book Orders due by tomorrow, just to ensure that we get them before break. If you order any that may be a Christmas surprise, please let me know and I’ll hold them and you may pick them up here at school. Just let me know! • We will be visiting the holiday shop on Tuesday, December 10th.
• Mrs. Brubaker’s 2nd grade Music Winter Concert will be Wednesday, December 11th at 6p.m. in the cafeteria.
• Next week we will have our Lesson 11 spelling test on Monday, December 9th.
• Math – We just started Chapter 6 in math, which will be adding 3-digit numbers.

Hello everyone!

Just a reminder that our Thanksgiving Feast will be tomorrow afternoon! If you signed up to send in materials, please send them with your child tomorrow morning. If you signed up to help volunteer, we will see you around 2!

EXTRA CREDIT for the Feast: Students can earn extra credit if they fill out the recipe card that was given out (it was attached with the explanation of the extra credit) a few weeks ago. Students will also need to make the recipe to share and bring that in tomorrow (please nothing that needs to be heated up or refrigerated!), or you can bring it in if you are coming to volunteer. Thank you!

MITTEN TREE:

Dear Families,
Our annual Mitten Tree will be set up in the Hambright lobby. Let’s synergize and fill our tree with mittens, hats, scarves and gloves that will be donated to families in need. All sizes from infant to adult will be accepted. Donations must be new and are due by Thursday, December 19. Thank you for helping to keep Penn Manor families warm this winter!  

While you are Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, or Cyber Monday shopping, please keep this in mind.  

Adventure/Outdoor day and Camp Hoke – We celebrated outdoor day on Friday by creating our own camp site within our classroom. We had a blast at the Star Lab and learned about constellations and then came back and made our own out of toothpicks and marshmallows. The kids had a great time reading in the tents and sitting around our “campfire.” It was a fun day!

We will be switching lunch times with 3rd grade these two days in order to accomodate to a special activity they are doing. This means our lunch will be a whole hour later than usual. Please feel free to send in a small, dry snack with your child for a mid-morning snack break since they are not used to eating this late! Please DO NOT send anything with peanuts! Thanks!

Hello everyone!

It was so nice to see everyone last week during parent-teacher conferences, I truly enjoyed being able to sit and chat with you all. 🙂 Also, thank you to everyone who has sent in canned corn for our Thanksgiving food drive, we have until the end of this week for collection.

Thanksgiving Feast – Thanks for sending back the orange slips for our feast, I will be in touch with you within the next week about what we need for donations!

Spelling – Our Lesson 9 spelling test will be tomorrow. If you ever need to access the lists, or want extra practice for you child – www.spellingcity.com is a great resource. Search Hambright Elementary School and our lists are all under “Wayne Shope”.

Math – Our chapter 4 test will be towards the end of next week.

Finally, on Monday we celebrated our Veterans by honoring and clapping them as they were leaving on Monday. We also made cards for them, our own Mr. Howe is a veteran. Thank you to all who have served or are currently serving!

Another reminder: Students will be dismissed early (at 1:30 p.m.) on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week!

Happy Friday! We had a great week in 2nd grade. In Biology, we learned more about plants, vertabrates/invertabrates, wild weather and genetics. In math, we are currently learning how to add 2-digit numbers. The students are learning how to solve these problems using the CRA method. CRA stands for Concrete Representational Abstract. Bascially, the students are modeling/drawing the numbers using symbols in order to be able to visual see how “regrouping” works. This is a bit of a tedious process, as I’m sure you noticed with homework; however, it is really helpful for them and I see them completely understanding addition, rather than just going through the process of addition steps. It will also be helpful as we move forward in learning subtraction. Please let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to discuss! 🙂

• Monday – Lesson 7 Spelling Test and Library Book Exchange!
• Thursday – We will be having our Chapter 3 Math Test and Biology Test! We will be reviewing for both each day next week, so hopefully the students will be ready!
• Friday there is NO SCHOOL!
