Sight words are the most frequently occurring words in the books we read. The more successful your child is reading these words, the more successful they will be in reading!

Each child starts on the “White Belt. The color order of the belts are:White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Pink, and last but not least….The Black Belt! (And an extra question belt if they master all of the belts above).

Students will be tested periodically on their sight words, so please practice these at home.  Once a student is able to identify all of the words (out of order and within 3 seconds) on their colored “karate belt”, they will receive a new “karate belt” of words! Please help your child be responsible for keeping track of their belts.  If students lose or damage their ring of “belts,” they will have to start over again on the white belt.

Please make sure the karate belts are brought to school each day, so your child is able to have a chance at a new “karate belt”. I am so excited to see students move through word belts throughout the year! Feel free to e-mail or call me with any questions.
