This year, I will be visiting with the kindergarten students three times throughout the school year. During our lessons, we will be learning about what a school counselor’s job is, how to express feelings, how to get along, and how to be a great friend.

We will be using books, songs, role-play, and activities as we learn together!

Schedule for Conestoga:  Three lessons in November.

Schedule for Martic: Three lessons–one during each of the second, third, and fourth marking periods.

We are learning how to be “peacemakers” in first grade!  I will be seeing the first grade students four times this year to practice friendship skills such as talking it out rather than fighting, using our hands to help not hurt, learning how to “cool off” when we are angry, and figuring out the differences between reporting and tattling.

We will have fun singing songs, reading books, doing activities, and writing/drawing about our new skills!

We will discuss “OK” and “not OK” touches, learning to trust instincts and feelings, the concept of private areas/zones, how to be assertive, and how to ask an adult for help when needed.

To empower students to help others during times of peer aggression, the third grade classes will be participating in a special curriculum unit developed by American Girl, in partnership with the Ophelia Project.  The curriculum introduces students to Chrissa, a girl who faces bullying at her new school and finds the courage to do something about it.

The curriculum educates students about the ways in which people bully, identifies the roles in aggression (the bully, the target, and the bystander,  or the “kid in the middle”), and encourages students to stand up for one another and to report bullying to adults.

My goal is to use this curriculum to promote a safe, kind, and respectful environment for your child.

As a parent, you are the most influential person in your child’s life.  What can you do to protect him or her from peer aggression?

  • Model kindness and inclusion in your home.
  • Take your child’s friendship and bullying concerns seriously.
  • Provide opportunities for your child to form friendships outside of school.
  • Develop a relationship with your child’s teachers, coaches, and school officials (preferably before your child comes to you with concerns about bullying).
  • Educate yourself about bullying and the strategies that work best to encounter it.  Then, pass it on!  Share what you’ve learned.

Together, we can make school a safer place for all students!

Also, please feel free to contact me if you have questions about the curriculum or concerns about how peer aggression may be affecting your child.

Thank you for your support!

SIXTH GRADE

The Penn Manor School District elementary counselors provide a program on sexual harassment and cyberbullying for all sixth grade students. These videos have been viewed and approved by our Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Egan.

During the presentation, we will be discussing the definition of sexual harassment as well as exploring the Penn Manor School District Board Policy and reporting procedures. Students will learn the differences between sexual harassment and flirting. We will also be defining and discussing examples of cyberbullying and learning the steps to take when responding to a sexual harassment or cyberbullying incident.
