LeTort Reads!

We continue to find meaningful ways to engage our Letort students. We have begun a Google site with staff members reading aloud to our students. New videos will be added, so keep tuning in.

On-Line Learning Opportunities available NOW

Penn Manor educators have developed continuity of education plans to help students continue learning from home while our schools are closed.

Here is a link to the resources. Please note that in addition to your child’s grade level resources, there is also a link for Academic Support (AST) resources.

These are optional, ungraded learning activities that students can complete from home. The resources have been developed to meet a variety of students’ needs and may not be the same across our school district.

Teachers will be accessible to students and parents and will respond to any questions about the learning activities in a timely manner.

Currently, schools are scheduled to reopen April 9, but that date may change depending on Governor Wolf’s orders.

Thank you for your support of your child’s education in this challenging time.

January Testing

The AST team will not be meeting with reading groups for about 2 weeks because January school wide reading assessments began today.  I will continue to send home reading bags for first grade students during this time.

The January Assessments include:

Kindergarten Assessments – Sight words (The words tested are found on this blog.), letter names, letter sounds, first sound in words when asked orally – (“What is the first sound in the word man?” /m/), Segmenting sounds in words when asked orally –  (What are all the sounds in the word cat? /c/ /a/ /t/) and an assessment to determine overall reading level.

First Grade – Sight words (The words tested are found on this blog.), blending of letter sounds with a consonant, vowel, and consonant to create a pretend word (for example, “mip”), reading passages at the first grade level and an assessment to determine overall reading level.

Second Grade – Sight words (The words tested are found on this blog.), reading passages (oral reading and comprehension) at the second grade level and an assessment to determine overall reading level.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the assessments, our schedule or anything else.

Update on your child’s progress:

I am sending home your child’s updated assessment graphs today. As you know, every other cycle a one minute assessment is done with your child to track progress. Kindergarten students are monitored on their ability to identify letter names. First graders are monitored for the first half of the school year with “pretend words” and second graders with oral reading passages.

If you have not received this information in the past and would like to, please let me know. As always, let me know if you have any questions. Have a great holiday!
