As a way to promote career exploration and awareness with our elementary students, Penn Manor elementary schools are planning a special day across the district.

On Friday, February 21st, 2020 students will be invited to wear clothing that represents a career they may be interested in exploring as an adult. For example, your child may come dressed as a construction worker, a doctor, a teacher, etc. Please make sure that your child’s clothing is appropriate for a day of learning and wouldn’t distract other students in his/her classroom.  As an added component to Kids at Work Day, teachers and staff will be wearing their college, military, trade-school, or past/present career attire.

Our hope is that Kids at Work Day will be a great way to start conversations at home and at school about different types of careers, why someone chooses a career, and what kind of training/schooling is needed to get started in a particular career.  To help facilitate discussion at home regarding career development, please refer to the “additional resources” at the end of this post for some fun, age-appropriate career development activities.

The Penn Manor Elementary School Counselors would like to thank you in advance for your support for Kids at Work Day. If you have any questions, please contact your school’s counselor.

New Year News!

2nd Marking period …..

Ends this Friday January 10th. I cannot believe how quickly this year is passing! Students are putting their final touches on a their second marking period reading projects. I will be taking some pictures when they are presenting their projects. One student said, “It feels so grown up to finish a project that I did totally on my own!” I am so proud of them. This week’s spelling test will be the last spelling test in the marking period.

We are moving on from multiplication and division and going to other math topics. We have just started Chapter 10 Fractions. Students will be learning part of a whole fraction and part to group fractions (ratios). Students will also be completing a small unit about money. Chapter 9 test Corrections are going home tomorrow and I will asked that the corrections will be due Tuesday, January 14.

Reading and Language Arts

Students are reading a chapter book called Stone Fox. It is written about an young boy who helps to save his grandfather’s potato farm. We will be doing small projects around the story. It is a really good first novel and students are really enjoying it. We are writing friendly letters to people or teams or other famous people to practice the friendly letter format.

Science and Social studies

We are finishing up a unit on Physics that focuses on Sound, heat and light energy. We have gotten to know famous scientists and have completed experiments to test ideas about these types of energy. Students will be taking a test at the end of next week about our energy unit. Students will receive a study guide this Thursday to help them practice for the test.

At Home Reading

Students are still required to read at home. We are pushing for the next 10 weeks to be the most that they ever read. I am asking students to change their habits so that they can reach higher goals for more minutes. Right now our goals in our class range from 50 minutes a week to 500 minutes a week. Keep encouraging the reading at home.

Thank you!

Thank you again for all the support and encouragment this class receives from all of you. They are so well cared for and love learning. Thank you so much for giving your best for these wonderful students!

Holiday Activities

School Event

The students of 3 Garvey made their goals twice in the month of November!!! We voted and students would like to have a present exchange. There are two exchanges that your child can participate in. The first is a white elephant exchange. The student can make something or bring something from home as a present. It can be funny or silly. They should not buy it. It should be wrapped and we will play the present game.

The other exchange will be with a gift that is under $5. Students will draw names and buy a gift and wrap it with the student’s name on it. The students will open these gifts on  December 20th, the last day of school before the holiday break. Your child may participate in one, both or none of these activities.

A paper will be coming home tonight. Please talk to your child about what they want to participate in and fill out the paper. This paper is due Tuesday, December 17.

Stocking Stuffer ideas

There are a few ideas that I have for your child that you could put in their stocking. The first item is an expo dry erase marker. I have used up the stockpile that I ordered this year. Your child uses a marker every dayin various content ativities. Also, we are coming to the end with our multiplication unit.

Only about 5 or 6 students have their multiplication facts mastered in our class. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of time in school for memorization of multiplication facts. A great stocking stuffer would be multiplication cards. You can spend hours of fun with your child learning math facts!! Seriously, your child will do so much better in math if those facts are memorized. Please email me if you would also like paper copies sent home so you can practice with your child. Email me at

Next Week 11/25-27

Please remember that we have school Monday and Tuesday, a full day, and then Wednesday is a 1:30 dismissal. Students in our class will be completing and Unit 3 test on Tuesday and we will be working on our social studies country project.

Just a reminder that we are going to have our international food tasting on Wednesday. If you have a food that you would like to donate or would like to go to the international section of the food market to purchase something, we only need a serving for 6 to 8 people. This is only a tasting and I thank you in advance if you would like to donate something.

No spelling list next week. Also, I have given the students off next week from weekly at home reading if they want to. If they want to read, I will have a special prize for them on Tuesday when we get back! I hope that you and your families have a wonderful holiday. We have been talking about family traditions and there are so many fun and interesting ones from our class this year. I appreciate all of you.
