After completing the search for Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education to replace Mrs. Vickie Hallock’s position due to her retirement, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jerry Egan will be recommended to the School Board on March 16, 2015 for appointment to the position.

Dear Member of the Penn Manor Community,
The Penn Manor School Board is once again asking members of the Penn Manor community to participate in an online survey regarding the superintendent. The Survey Monkey tool is easy to use. There is also an open response area, giving participants the opportunity to communicate directly with all nine (9) School Board members. They review all scores and comments. Please take the time to respond at the site listed below. I value the feedback that you can provide and all responses are anonymous.
Even if you do not feel you have enough interaction with me to fully evaluate my strengths/weaknesses, I would encourage you to take this opportunity to share any comment you may have about the overall impression you have of the Penn Manor School District.
The survey will close on Wednesday, February 18. Thank you for your time.
Michael G. Leichliter, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
On January 20, 2015 I will be discussing the proposed school calendar for 2015-2016 at the School Board meeting. I received 132 responses from faculty and community members from the survey I put out last month. 90% of those responding to the survey liked this calendar. There were some suggestions, a few of which we incorporated into the attached calendar. The most notable comment was the omission of the January Back to School Night early dismissal for the high school faculty. This date has now been included on January 29, 2016. Also, please note that there is one event that may still need to be changed. The 2016 senior prom date has not been finalized yet. The school district tries to plan an early dismissal that day to give parents on the Post-Prom Committee access to the high school cafeteria in order to prepare for the evening event. Please know that if a date for prom other than May 20 is chosen, we will need to move that district early dismissal.

Please review the following changes and reminders as a result of the school closing on Monday, January 12, 2015:
- Friday, January 16, 2015, is now a regular school day for all students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
- The secondary in-service day and elementary early dismissal has been moved from Friday, January 16, 2015 to Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Students in grades 7-12 will not have school, and students in grades K-6 will have a 1:30 p.m. early dismissal on January 20th.
- Monday, January 19, 2015 remains a vacation day for students and faculty.
- School will now be in session on Friday, February 13, 2015.
December is a busy season for everyone with holiday concerts, shopping, and other festivities. In the school superintendent world it is also time (believe it or not) to work on the proposed school calendar for next year. In looking at the calendar for 2015-2016, I quickly realized that Labor Day next year is as late as it can be which is September 7th. This means that if we followed the same pattern as this year, we would have been starting school on August 31st (we started on August 25th this year). One other factor for consideration is that we need to coordinate our end date with our Hempfield neighbors since we share the use of the arena at F&M for high school graduation.

You will see from the draft calendar that I am proposing a start date that is a little different than in past years. We will still observe the traditional pattern of mandatory faculty inservice days in the three week period prior to Labor Day. However, I have the start of school scheduled on August 26th (one day later than this year) and in the same week as our districtwide opening faculty inservice day. Half of the school districts in Lancaster County are also proposing (or have already adopted) a start date during this same week.
I plan to present the draft for board consideration at either the second meeting in January or the first meeting in February. As has been my practice in previous years, I would appreciate your feedback and have developed a simple survey for faculty, staff, parents, and community members to share comments with me at the following site: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/15-16PMcalendar
Thanks for your help!
