Monthly Archives: May 2016

Thank you, Mr. Hardy!

Today the kids are bringing home a beautiful pressed flower picture.  Mr. Hardy came in on Monday to talk to us about plants as a follow up to our field trip.  Mrs. Hardy came along and was his lovely assistant!  We got to hold a cocoa bean.  We also saw the smallest seed and the 2nd largest seed!  Ask the kids to tell you about them!  Mr. Hardy showed the kids how to carefully glue flowers onto special paper.  We pressed them down with books for the last 4 days and now we have a beautiful reminder of first grade and all of the things we have been learning about plants!

Since we missed book exchange on Friday while we were on our field trip, Mrs. Calender allowed our class to exchange books today.  This was for any student who didn’t owe her an overdue library book.  These books will all be due back to the library by this Friday, May 27.  It’s a short period of time, but Mrs. Calender loves when the kids are able to have a new book to read!

The Lancaster Public Library will be bringing the Bookmobile to our very own Eshleman Elementary School.  It will arrive on the first and third Thursday from 6/13-8/19, between 9:00-10:00 AM.  Mark your calendars!

We had a “ONEderful” field trip to Hershey Gardens on Friday!  The weather was just perfect and so were the kids!  Thanks to all of you for remembering to pack lunches and send the kids to school in comfortable shoes!  Our chaperones couldn’t have been any sweeter.  It was the perfect field trip!  Mr. Hardy will join us on Monday to talk to us some more about plants as a follow up to our trip!

While we were in Hershey we missed our book exchange day.  We’ll exchange books for the last time tomorrow.  I’ll also send home our last spelling list of the year.

This Thursday is our DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) day.  Send in some books for your child to read as we relax and enjoy a few good stories together.

Monday, May 30 – No school for students.  Enjoy your extra day off together.

I will be out of school on Wednesday and Friday afternoons this week enjoying some end of year activities with my youngest.  We have substitutes all lined up and ready to teach our class.

Mark your calendar for our Doorbell Rang performance on Thursday, June 2nd.  Show times for family members are 11:30 or 2:30.  Younger siblings are welcome to attend too! Donations of cups, lemonade and cookies are welcome.  We’ll share these with the visitors who come to see our show!  If you will be taking any Eshleman children home with you after our 2:30 performance, please be sure to complete the dismissal form that was sent home at the end of last week.

Friday, June 3 will be our first grade water party in the afternoon.  The kids may wear bathing suits under their clothing if they would like to have a suit on to play our water games.  They won’t get soaked, but they will get wet!  I’ll need some parent helpers to run some of our water stations.  Please let me know if you would like to come in to help for an hour or so that afternoon.  Mr. Heiney and I still need to pick a time but I’m guessing it will be close to 2:00 PM.

Monday, June 6 is  the PTO SPLASH PARTY at the Millersville Pool.  Donations are being accepted for the first grade “ice cream” themed basket.  Baskets will be raffled off at the splash party.  Please send your RSVP to school so the PTO can count you in on the fun!

Monday, June 6th will also be a book swap in our room.  If you have some books that you would like to trade in, send them to school.  I’ll let the kids swap them for a different one for some summer reading!

Tuesday, June 7 is our board game day in 1-T.  Send some games in that first graders would enjoy playing together.  We’ll send them back at the end of the day!

Wednesday, June 8 – Last day of first grade.  This is an 11:30 early dismissal day.  This year has flown by!

I’ll keep the reminders coming!  There’s so much going on at this time of year!  Thanks for all of your help!

A few reminders

Please send field trip forms to school by Friday.  There is a lot to complete on the form.  If any information has been missed, I’ll be sending the form home for you to complete the highlighted spaces.  I’ll be contacting chaperones soon if you are able to accompany us on our field trip.  We had many parents who volunteered to go on our trip, and I wish I could take all of you!  Admission for all students and chaperones is free!  Thank you PTO!

Thursday is team day for our book fair spirit day.  It’s also book exchange day.  The kids will also be getting new spelling words.  I have a substitute in the morning.

Friday is fringe day!  (Think 70’s fringes on the end of shirts).  The kids were so confused!  I’ll be out all day.  Please direct all transportation changes to Mrs. Aument in the office.  Friday is a 1:30 early dismissal day.

Next week we will be having awesome activities day on Wednesday, May 18th.  Our class should wear yellow or gold shirts if they have one.  Everyone needs to wear sneakers please.

Our next spelling test will be on Thursday, May 19.

The kids were so good today!  I’m losing my voice and can barely speak.  They were working so quietly they received a compliment from Mrs. Kaplan when she came into our room!  Way to go, First Graders!

I had a chance to read individually with the children yesterday.  They have all grown in their reading so much and I couldn’t be more proud of them!  Thank you for reading at home together!

Forms, Forms, Forms

Two forms are coming home today.  The first is a form to apply for a library card for your student.  The cover letter is a little confusing, so here’s the nuts and bolts of it.  Complete the short form if you do NOT want your child to receive a library card (or s/he already has one).  Complete the longer form if you DO want your student to receive a library card.

The second form is a permission slip for your student to attend our field trip to Hershey Gardens, on May 20.  There will be a place to indicate if your child will be bringing his/her own packed lunch, or if you would like to order a packed lunch from the cafeteria.
