Week of February 19th…

Hi, Martic 5th Grade Families,

I hope you and your family were able to enjoy our three day weekend!  Before I get to our curriculum news, I’d like to share with you a segment on what is coming up this Friday at Martic.  I believe this is our third, or fourth,  year participating in this district-wide activity.  We hope your child will participate if possible.

Kids at Work Day is on Friday, February 23rd, 2018!

As a way to promote career exploration and awareness with our elementary students, Penn Manor elementary schools are planning a special day across the district.

On Friday, February 23, 2018, students will be invited to wear clothing that represents careers that they may be interested in exploring as an adult. For example, your child may come dressed as a construction worker, a doctor, a teacher, etc. Please make sure that your child’s clothing is appropriate for a day of learning and wouldn’t distract other students in his/her classroom.  As an added component to Kids at Work Day, teachers and staff will be wearing their college, military, trade school, or past/present career attire.

Our hope is that Kids at Work Day will be a great way to start conversations at home and at school about different types of careers, why someone chooses a career, and what kind of training/schooling is needed to get started in a particular career.

Curriculum News:

Reading: Today, we completed our lesson 17 vocabulary lesson that we began last Friday.  Tomorrow, we will do the first close reading of our realistic fiction passage, unpack our thinking, and discuss what we’re reading to ensure comprehension. We will also practice drawing inferences along the way.  Thursday, we’ll complete our second close reading and independently complete our comprehension activity.  On Friday, we’ll review inferencing and our vocabulary to ready us for successful completion of our independent focus skill and vocabulary activities.

Spelling:  Your child received her/his spelling homework packet today.  Since it is Tuesday, the packet won’t be due until Friday.  The test will also be on Friday.   It is a review lesson this week, so there are four activity pages to complete instead of three.  I always remind the children of this but want to make families aware of it also.

Math: This week in math we will continue our multiplying and dividing fractions unit. Tuesday was our first day of dividing, and we talked about how to use inverse operations when dividing a whole number by a fraction. Wednesday we will use a very similar strategy while dividing fractions by whole numbers. On Thursday we will review all of the multiplication and division strategies we have learned in unit 10, and Friday will be our end of unit test. Keep up the hard work fifth graders!

Your children are working extremely hard, across the curriculum, and we are very proud of them!!!  We know they will continue to do so.  Thank you very much for your continuous support.  It really means a lot!

Have a wonderful week, and enjoy the warm weather today and tomorrow!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
