Week of May 28th…

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend!  This is my last official post for the 2017/2018 school year.  Where has the time gone?  I can’t believe that we are down to single digits for the number of days remaining!!! Read on to find out what brain stretching and strengthening activities we will be up to this week.

Reading:  Due to the extra time that we took on our last round of readers’ theaters, last week, lesson twenty-six was started today.  We all thoroughly enjoyed the performances of the twisted fairytales!  Your children put 150% effort into being a team player when preparing their presentation with her/his group. YOU 5th Grade readers and writers ROCKED the HOUSE!!! Our reading passage is a nonfiction narrative about the Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea expedition. This ties in nicely with our last social studies unit of the Westward Movement.  Our focus skill is paraphrasing and summarizing.  This will be the last anthology lesson that we cover for the school year.

Math: This week in math we will continue to review fraction and decimal computation during stations on Tuesday and WednesdayOn Friday we will begin our final math project of the year, building toothpick bridges. Students will work in groups to balance a budget as they buy supplies for the bridge, and on Wednesday of next week, we will see which bridge can hold the most weight. This week will also be our last homework assignment in math. Keep up the hard work fifth graders!

Reminders:

This Thursday, May 31st, is our field trip to the Whitaker Science Center in Harrisburg.  We are really looking forward to it! Shortly after the students arrive, at the regular time, in the morning, we will get into our designated groups and board the buses.  If your child is packing a lunch at home, please remind her/him that lunch boxes are not permitted.  Everyone’s lunch needs to be in some sort of a disposable bag.  Please also remind him/her that a drink MUST be in a plastic bottle or cardboard carton. We CANNOT take any glass bottles.  All lunch materials and any leftover food must be thrown away when we are done eating.  We are not allowed to bring any food items back on the bus, to Martic, with us.

Next Wednesday, June 6th, we will have our end of the year read-in!  We are not wearing pajamas this time around. Please remind your child to bring a blanket or sleeping bag to spread out and read on.  Plus, books, books, books!

Next Thursday, June 7th, is our students’ last day from 9-11:30.  Lunch will not be served on this day.

I have truly enjoyed teaching your children this school year!  Each and every one of them is a wonderful and unique individual who has a lot to offer our world!!!  Thank you for everything that you have done, and do,  for your child on a daily basis!

Take care and have an enjoyable and relaxing summer!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
