Week of September 4th…

Hello Families,

This is my first post for the 2018/2019 school year.  The children have been working hard and doing a super job of getting into our routine!  I know they will keep up the good work.  Read on to see how we will be stretching our brains and making them stronger this week.  You ROCK 5th graders!

Curriculum News:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Reading:  Last week we wrapped up our small unit on learning about the differences between having a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset.  Plus, we finished learning about the eight different smarts that we each possess in our brain. Throughout the year, we will incorporate these concepts into our lessons.  Last Wednesday, we began our first reading anthology lesson. We will continue the lesson today and finish it up by the end of the week. Our focus skill for lesson number one is plot: conflict and resolution. Our reading selection is realistic fiction.

Math: This week in math we will continue our practice with place value. Tuesday we learned how to compare and order whole numbers up to the millions. Wednesday we will take our first quiz of the year, then practice comparing decimals to the thousandths place. On Thursday we will continue working on comparing decimals, and work on ordering decimals as well. Friday we will put everything together, and work on comparing and ordering whole numbers and decimals together. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!

Spelling:  Spelling will begin next week on Monday, September 10th.

Thank you for your support and have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
