Week of January 22nd…

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone had a great weekend. The children came in rested, refreshed, and ready to roll from their four day weekend! Keep reading to find out how we’ll be exercising our brains to make them stronger this week.

Curriculum News:

Reading:  Today, we got into our three different MLK readers’ theaters for the first time.  The children collaboratively divided the different parts amongst themselves and began practicing their fluency.  Tomorrow, we will continue practicing in order to make our group’s performance as realistic as possible.  We will also discuss what props to use throughout our performance.  Thursday, we will begin to have our groups perform and see if we can have all three present.  If not, we will wrap up our performances on Friday. If we have time, we will also, do some reviewing of reading and analyzing to identify the theme of a short narrative.

Spelling: We are not doing a spelling unit this week. Thus, your child will not have a spelling homework packet to complete by Thursday or a spelling test on Friday.

Math: This week in math we will be starting our 9th unit, adding and subtracting fractions. Tuesday we will learn how to round fractions to either 0, 1/2, or 1. On Wednesday we will work on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Thursday will focus on adding and subtracting unlike denominators, using models to represent the sums and differences. Friday we will wrap up the week by practicing adding and subtracting unlike denominators, working on finding common denominators before adding and subtracting. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!

Reminders:

Friday, January 25th – 1:30 dismissal

Have a wonderful week and thank you for your support!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
