Week of January 28th…

Hi 5th Grade Families,

I hope you all had a nice weekend. Here are some of the activities that we will be doing this week in order to make our brains stronger. You fifth graders ROCK at stretching your brains every day… I know you’ll keep it up!!!

Curriculum News:

Reading:  Today in reading, we were introduced to our new robust vocabulary words.  We used our prior knowledge and context clues to predict the meanings of the words and then compared/contrasted our thoughts to the actual meanings.  Throughout the remainder of the week, we will be reading our realistic fiction narrative.  We will pay close attention to and analyze the characters’ qualities, actions, and motives in order to infer the theme of the story.  We will also mark up a TDA prompt based on this realistic fiction narrative and write a quality introductory paragraph, as well as work on two column notes to organize our thoughts.

Spelling: Your child received her/his spelling homework packet. This week it is a review lesson so there are four pages to complete instead of three. Your child is aware that the packet is due on Thursday and that the test is on Friday.

Math: This week in math we will be continuing our 9th unit, adding and subtracting fractions. Monday we will start off the week by practicing adding and subtracting unlike denominators again, working on finding common denominators before adding and subtracting. Tuesday we will take the mid unit quiz, which will review rounding as well as adding and subtracting fractions. Wednesday the students will learn how to estimate the sum and difference of mixed numbers, rounding them to the nearest whole based on the fraction being greater or less than a half. Thursday and Friday we will wrap up the week by practicing adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!

Reminders: Second marking period report cards will come home with your child this Friday, February 1st.

Have a wonderful week and thank you for all of your support.

Mrs. Eby 🙂
