Week of February 25th…

Hi Everyone,

It’s hard to believe that this coming Friday is March 1st already! Keep reading to find out ways that we will be working out our brains to help them become stronger.

Curriculum News:

Reading:  Today, we picked up where we left off last Friday.  We did a review activity, with our ten new robust vocabulary words, and then completed our independent vocab activity.  We also reviewed how to identify a narrative’s theme and began working on our focus skill independent activity which we will finish tomorrow.  Next, we will read a realistic fiction narrative together, unpack our thinking along the way, and note the details in order to determine the story’s lesson.  On Wednesday, the students will mark up a TDA prompt that is based on this realistic fiction piece, and begin writing our two-column notes, graphic organizer.  Thursday we will continue to work on our two-column notes together and attempt to finish it.  Friday, we hope to begin reading and analyzing our first poem in order to figure out its message. This will be an introduction to a mini unit on theme in poetry.  5th graders… I know you will continue to keep your growth mindsets on!  Way to go!!!

Spelling: Your child received her/his spelling packet today. They are aware that the homework packet is due on Thursday and that our test is on Friday.

Math: This week in math we will start the week by focusing on multiplication as scaling, determining if multiplying a whole number by a fraction will result in a product larger than the whole number multiplier. Tuesday we will learn how to divide whole numbers by unit fractions, and Wednesday we will take our mid unit quiz. Thursday the students will learn how to divide unit fractions by whole numbers. On Friday we will have review stations to work on all of our multiplication and division of fraction skills. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!
