Week of September 3rd…

Hello Everyone!

This is my first blog for the 2019/2020 school year. I hope that you all had a nice and relaxing Labor Day weekend! The children came in ready to hit the ground running this morning…Way to go 5th graders!!! Keep reading to find out some ways that we will be exercising and stretching our brains in order to make them stronger!

Curriculum News:

Reading:  Today in reading, we began tapping into our prior knowledge to see what we remember about figurative language.  We also started reviewing the different types of figurative language that we will be concentrating on this year. Throughout the remainder of the week, we will identify examples of the different types of figures of speech,  within different texts, as well as interpret and explain their meanings orally and in writing. If time allows, we will begin working with our first anthology story which is a realistic fiction piece.

Spelling: Your child received her/his first spelling homework packet today. They are aware that they have Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night to complete it. They will turn it in on Friday morning. His/her spelling test will also be on Friday morning. Please give your child a practice test Thursday night to help her/him prepare for Friday’s test.

Math: This week in math we will work on comparing and ordering decimals and whole numbers on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Wednesday will our first quiz of the year for everything we have learned so far in math. Friday we will shift our focus to understanding that place values to the right of a given place have a value that is 1/10 as big, and value to the left get 10 times bigger. We will also review place value of decimals, as well as expanded, word, and standard form of decimals that we worked hard on last week. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!

Have a wonderful week, and thank you for your support!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
