Week of September 30th…

Hello Everyone,

I hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable weekend! Keep reading to find out some activities that we will be doing in order to stretch and strengthen our brains.

Curriculum News:

Reading:  Today in reading, we began working with a TDA prompt and will continue working with it tomorrow.  On Wednesday, we will be introduced to our new robust vocabulary and use our prior knowledge and context clues to figure out their meanings. If need be, we will finish up the vocabulary lesson on Thursday and begin reading our next passage.  We’ll analyze the text to identify its elements of fiction. We will finish reading the passage on Friday and get ready to move into a comprehension activity. Keep staying in a growth mindset readers and writers… You’re doing great!

Spelling: Your child received her/his spelling packet today. It is our first review lesson, and there are four pages instead of the usual three. I brought this to the kids’ attention. Your child is aware that the packet is due on Thursday and our test will be on Friday.

Math: This week in math we will turn our focus to the first of two division units. Unit 3 is all about diving by one digit divisors. On Monday we will work on fact families, linking knowledge of multiplication facts to division facts. On Tuesday we will work on dividing by powers of ten, and working with the zeros in the dividend. Wednesday we will take our lesson from Tuesday, and apply it to estimating quotients using rounding and compatible numbers. Thursday and Friday we will work on 3 different strategies for division, and students will choose which strategy works best for them. Keep up the hard work in math 5th grade!

Reminders:

This Thursday, Oct. 3rd is picture day!

Have a wonderful week and thank you for your support!
