Week of January 21st…

Hello, Martic 5th Grade Families,

I hope that you all had an enjoyable and relaxing weekend! Here are a few activities coming down the pike, this week, in 5th grade. They will help to S-T-R-E-T-C-H and strengthen our brains! Keep staying in a growth mindset 5th graders…YOU ROCK!!!

Curriculum News:

Reading: Today in reading, we began to add to our prior knowledge about who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was and why he is remembered.  We did this by reading an informational passage about him.  We also began our second round of Readers’ Theaters which are centered around Dr. Martin Luther King’s life. The children in each group divided up the parts and began to practice their fluency. Wednesday and Thursday, we will continue to practice our readers’ Theaters so that on Friday, we can begin to present them to the class.  At the end of each RT, we will analyze the characters’ qualities and actions to help us determine the theme of each one.

Spelling: Your child was given their spelling homework packet today. They know that it is due on Friday and that our test is on Friday as well. Please continue to help your child study the weekly words so that she/he is prepared for the test on Friday. Thanks!

Math: This week in math we will begin Tuesday with adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. On Wednesday we will practice adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, but we use models to help visualize what happens when we find a common denominator. Thursday we will move on to adding and subtracting, unlike fractions without the models. On Friday the focus will be on word problems, again practicing adding and subtracting, unlike fractions. Keep up the hard work in math 5th grade!

Reminders:

This Friday, January 24th, is a 1:30 dismissal day.

Thank you for your support, and have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
