Week of January 27th…

Hi Everyone,

Happy Monday! I hope that you all had an enjoyable and relaxing weekend. Here are a few activities that will be happening this week in 5th grade. They will put our brains through a rigorous workout and make them stronger!

Curriculum News:

Reading: Today in reading, we wrapped up our Readers’ Theaters on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The children did a wonderful job of working together while practicing their fluency!  Throughout the remainder of the week, we will be introduced to our new robust vocabulary and engage in a few activities that will move the words and their meanings into our longterm memories. Then, we will read, analyze and discuss our next realistic fiction passage. This will enable us to identify the main characters’ actions and qualities so that they will help us determine the theme and main idea of the narrative.

Spelling: Your child received their spelling homework packet today. He/she is aware that the packet is due on Thursday and that our test is on Friday.

Math: This week in math, we will continue working on adding and subtracting fractions. Monday will be a review day of the skills we have covered so far this unit, and Tuesday will be our mid-unit quiz. On Wednesday we will shift our focus to adding and subtracting mixed numbers, starting out with estimating the sums and differences by rounding to the nearest whole. Thursday we will add and subtract mixed numbers, using estimation to check for reasonableness. Friday we will close out the week with another day to practice the steps of adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Keep up the hard work in math 5th grade!

Reminders:

Your child received her/his report card today. Please keep the report card for your information and sign the front of the envelope to return with your child. Thank you!

Have a wonderful week, and thank you for your continuous support!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
