Week of February 3rd…

Hello, Martic 5th Grade Families,

How did it get to be February already? I hope that you all had a great weekend! Keep reading to find out some of the ways that we’ll be stretching our brains in order to make them stronger this week.

Curriculum News:

Reading:  This week in reading, we are continuing to read, analyze and discuss the realistic fiction passage that we began last week.  This will enable us to identify the main characters’ actions and qualities so that they will help us to determine the theme and main idea of the narrative.   We will also independently work through a comprehension, vocabulary, and determining the theme activities based on our realistic fiction passage.  When we complete these, we’ll read and analyze a few short stories and infer their theme, as well as their main idea.  Keep staying in a growth mindset 5th graders…You ROCK!!!

Spelling: Your child received his/her spelling homework packet today. She/he knows that the packet is due on Thursday. He/she also knows that our spelling test will be on Friday.

Math: This week in math we will be wrapping up unit 9. On Monday and Tuesday, the focus will be on subtracting mixed numbers when borrowing is required. We also call this skill subtracting with renaming, and it focuses on when the larger mixed number has a smaller fraction than the mixed number we are subtracting by. On Wednesday we will review all the skills we learned about adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers by doing stations. Thursday is the test day, so make sure to complete the study guides Wednesday night. Friday we will end the week by introducing multiplication of fractions, focusing on a more visual representation of parts of a whole. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!

Reminders:

This Friday, February 7th, the children will be dismissed at 1:30.

Thank you for your support and have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
