School Closure Extended

Updated March 23, 2020 — The state Department of Education has announced that all schools will remain closed through at least April 6 as a result of the COVID-19 response efforts. The closure order could be extended beyond April 6 if necessary to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus and save lives.

Under the new timeline, schools would reopen on April 7 for two days to allow school administrators, teachers and other staff time to prepare classrooms, set up cafeterias, schedule transportation and arrange other business operations. Students would return to school on April 9, unless the closure is extended in response to the situation involving the virus.

April 9 and April 13, which were previously snow make-up days, will be used as school days. There will be no school on April 10 (Good Friday).

While school is closed, Penn Manor plans to implement optional at-home student learning plans for grade levels and subjects. Teachers and administrators will be meeting this week to formulate details on delivering these activities to families beginning Monday, March 30.

The district also will continue to deliver meals to students at their regular morning bus stops this Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Details and updates regarding the food delivery program are available here.

Please check back for updates later this week regarding the optional at-home learning plans, and please stay safe.

Updates

As we continue to navigate these unprecedented times, I wanted to provide you with some updates as I have received them.

A message from Dr. Leichliter:

Penn Manor schools are closed through March 27 in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. It is unclear whether that status will change or when we may be able to resume normal operations. As we all deal with this unprecedented challenge, we want to let students and parents know that the education of children is on hold as the district evaluates options moving forward. Penn Manor continues to follow direction from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Please understand that teachers will not be instructing students, grading assignments, or corresponding on instructional matters during the current 10-day closure. While teachers may have resources for students such as active Google Classrooms for their lessons, there is no expectation for student attendance or submission of assignments between March 16 and March 30.

Additionally, as you may be aware the school district is implementing a meal distribution plan for students that began today, Wednesday, March 18, that utilizes students’ morning bus stop locations. The free, bagged meals will be delivered by school buses and will include a lunch and breakfast for the following day comprised of foods that meet school nutritional standards. Complete details on this effort, which will be in effect during the current COVID-19 shutdown, are available here.

In terms of instruction, as noted by Dr. Leichliter above, I may not require anything at this time. You are always free to use the links at the top of this blog to keep your mind engaged. And of course, students may read, practice math facts, use computer games, etc.

Stay safe and enjoy your family time together.
