November 11-15

It was a pleasure to talk with you about your 4th grader last week. I always enjoy meeting with parents and know how important it is that we work together to give your child the best possible education. Thanks again for coming in.
Hambright is once again collecting food for needy families for Thanksgiving. Fourth grade’s assignment is canned sweet potatoes. Please consider donating if you are able. Thanks! And thanks to those who have already contributed.
Reading–We will review Unit 2 this week. The test will be given over two days, Thursday and Friday.
Spelling – Lesson 10 list will be distributed tomorrow. This is a review list of lessons 6-9, so all 20 words should be somewhat familiar with the students. The test will be on Friday.
Writing – Figurative language and nouns will begin this week!
Content – 4R students are now with Miss Szentesy for science.

November 4 – 8

Conference time already! I’m looking forward to talking with you all about your fourth grader!
No spelling list for this week!
There will also be no Book Exchange this week due to our early dismissals.

Reading– Unit 2 continues. We have been identifying main ideas and supporting details in nonfiction selections. We have been using these main ideas to write summaries of what we’ve read. The students have been doing an excellent job with this!
Spelling – No list or test this week due to our early dismissals.
Writing – Our paragraphs are finished! We will begin a grammar unit on nouns and will also delve into some figurative language.
Content – 4R students are now with Miss Szentesy for science.

Reading– We continue Unit 2 with a focus on finding main ideas and details and writing a summary.
Spelling – Unit 9 lists will come home tomorrow (Monday). The test on these words will be Thursday, 10/31, due to having no school on Friday.
Writing – We are finishing our paragraph unit with a revised and edited perfect paragraph!
Content – 4R students continue a science unit with Mr. Showalter. They will be switching to a new science unit with Miss Szentesy later in the week.

Please see the Conference Schedule form from this week’s Friday Folder if you haven’t already. Please confirm the date and time of your conference, sign the bottom of the form, and return it as soon as possible. Please keep the top of the form for your files.
Reading– Unit 2 continues with the focus on finding main ideas and supporting details in nonfiction text. We read “Dragons and Dinosaurs” in the Storytown book. After a few days of discussing how to summarize text this week, we will read a selection on the Grand Canyon. Remember, all selections are available for you to review with your child on this blog. Click on the ELA tab above and follow the link. I didn’t get around to checking reading calendars last week, so I will be doing that later this week. Please update if necessary. Thank you!

October 7-11

October already! We have had another busy week and are ending some of our units this coming week.

Reading– We will review Unit 1 on Monday and Tuesday and have our test on Wednesday. Students will apply the skills they have learned including characterization, plot elements and theme. We will begin Unit 2 on Thursday which focuses on main ideas and details. Please be sure to initial your child’s reading calendar (inside the planner) each evening.
Spelling – Unit 6 lists will come home Monday. The test on these words will be Friday, 10/11.
Writing – We will begin our perfect paragraph writing unit this week.
Social Studies – The William Penn/Early Settlers test will be Wednesday. We will review Monday and Tuesday.

September 30 – October 4

We had another productive week in 4th grade!  

Reading– We will be finishing Unit 1 this week. Our unit test will be the week of October 7. Remember that at-home reading is an on-going assignment. Don’t forget to sign the reading calendar in your child’s planner!
Spelling – Unit 5 lists will come home Monday. This list is a review of the previous four lessons. The test on these words will be Friday, 10/4.
Writing – We’ve been working on compound and complex sentences. We will soon begin our paragraph unit.
Social Studies – Students did an awesome job with the Native American test! We will begin our William Penn/Early Settlers unit this week.

September 23-27

We had another great week! Our Native American unit is almost finished, we read another good story in reading, and we’ve been working hard on subjects and predicates.

Reading– We continue our fiction unit. Our focus recently has been determining the theme in a story. As your child reads books at home, have a discussion about the theme (lesson the author wants us to learn) in these books. Remember that at-home reading is an on-going assignment. Don’t forget to sign the reading calendar in your child’s planner!
Spelling – Unit 4 lists will come home Monday, 9/23. The test on these words will be Friday, 9/27.
Writing – We have been discussing simple subjects and simple predicates.
Social Studies – We are almost finished with our Native American Unit. Students now have a study guide. Please help review for the test which will be next Tuesday.

September 16-20

We’ve had another productive week! We’ve been busy with all our subjects! Don’t forget Picture Day is coming up this week. A form for this came home earlier this week. Please remember to see the papers in the red Friday Folder. Please take out and keep the papers, then sign the sheet and return the folder on Monday.

Reading– We read a great biography about Jackie Mitchell, an amazing female pitcher who once struck out baseball greats, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. We have also practiced characterization, story elements, and finding evidence. Remember that at-home reading is an on-going assignment. Don’t forget to sign the reading calendar in your child’s planner!
Spelling – Students have been doing an awesome job on their spelling tests! Unit 3 lists will come home Monday, 9/16. The test on these words will be Friday.
Writing – We have been discussing the four types of sentences and subjects and predicates.
Social Studies – We have covered more of our Native American, PA History Unit. Students will bring home a study guide for this unit next week.
