PIAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

MAY 27 and MAY 28

Junior LAURA WISSLER PLACED EIGHTH AT STATES WITH A THROW OF 38′ 1″ in the shot put. This meets the national silver standard.  Laura is an elite athlete.  Under the pressure of competing against 24 other athletes, LAURA was able to perform consistently with her past performances and IMPROVE HER SEED FROM 9th to 8th!!  SHE TOOK A MEDAL AT STATES AND IS THE SECOND FEMALE FROM PM TO MEDAL IN THE SHOT PUT AT STATES!!  (The last PM athlete who placed at STATES in shot was the 1975 record holder, Brenda Fink.)

Laura is SUPER excited to be part of a life-changing event!!! Coach Joe Herman has grown a beard since 1976.  He said that if an athlete placed at the PIAA Championships, that he would LET THEM SHAVE HIS LONG-STANDING BEARD!  Laura is ready to CUT CUT CUT (with sheep shears, I think!)

Senior SARAH CONNER PLACED EIGHTH AT STATES WITH A THROW OF 120′ 4″ in the discus. This meets the national silver standard. Sarah is an elite athlete. Under the pressure of competing against 23 other athletes, SARAH was able to perform consistently with her past performances and IMPROVE HER SEED FROM 14th to 8th!  After the preliminaries, Sarah was in 9th place with a throw  of 116′ 7″  Sarah was able to use a full-spin technique on all her throws.  She pushed herself into 8th when she threw over 120′

Now, Sarah can join Laura in CUTTING MR. HERMAN’S LONG, WHITE BEARD!!!  Sarah says she thinks she has a pair of clippers from her job!

It was great to see former throwers at Ship to cheer  for Sarah!  PM Alum Carenna Neely, who currently attends SHIP and throws there.  And PM Alum Becca Conner, who currently attends Thaddeus Stevens.  In the last seven seasons, PM has had EIGHT(!) DIFFERENT DISTRICT QUALIFIERS in the girls discus (Erica Metzger ’05; Alie Girvin ’06, ’07, ’08; Martha Stefaniak ’09; Becca Conner ’10; Carenna Neely ’10; Helen Doolittle ’10 and ’11; Sarah Conner ’10 and ’11; and Megan Haines ’11).  PM has also had THREE STATE QUALIFIERS in the girls discus: Alie Girvin ’06, ’07 and ’08, Carenna Neely ’10, and Sarah Conner ’11.
