Cargas 2022.jpgWe are THRILLED to announce that Cargas, a Lancaster-based, employee-owned software company offering software from Microsoft, Sage, Salesforce, and HubSpot, as well as custom-developed products, will host a Hybrid Classroom for All Star Code’s Summer Intensive Program! ASC is a leading national organization educating young men of color in computer science, exposing scholars to tech entrepreneurship, and providing them with tools for success in the tech industry.
ASC’s Summer Intensive is a FREE, rigorous 6-week coding education program that embeds mentorship and personal & professional life skills instruction- all in a fun, engaging virtual environment. Laptops & WiFi hotspots are provided to every enrolled scholar & devices are the students’ to keep at the conclusion of the program. Scholars will earn $15/hr stipends to participate. For the 2023 Summer Intensive Program, thanks to the generosity of The Steinman Foundation & Lancaster County STEM Alliance, 40 fully-funded slots are available to Lancaster County students & registration is open!
Who can apply for the Summer Intensive?
A Scholar who is a rising 9-12th grade student OR 2023 HS graduate A Scholar who identifies as a male student of color Willingness to engage in ASC’s 3 pillars: Dare Greatly, Celebrate Failure & Tell Your Story Interest but not necessarily experience in coding, computer science, technology & entrepreneurship GPA is NOT evaluated for consideration in the program Students with IEPs and English Language Learners are encouraged to apply! Specialized assistance is provided & daily office hours are available for extra supportLancaster County students will have the unique opportunity to learn on-site at Cargas in the Hybrid Classroom. They’ll benefit from an in-person Summer Intensive Coordinator available to support their virtual learning, experience an industry leader’s incredible environment and hear from Cargas team members first-hand. And did we mention PING-PONG? Its true- Cargas’ space at 101 N. Queen Street in Lancaster is second to none, and we are excited to share this with our Summer Intensive students! The IU13 is pleased to announce Micro-Scholarships for Industry-Recognized Credentials!  This micro-scholarship opportunity (up to $500) was made possible through a grant from the Arconic Foundation. High school students who want to pursue industry-recognized credentials to prepare for future careers are encouraged to apply!  Check out the many options you can apply for. Vaping Prevention and Awareness Night

On Thursday, April 20, 2023, Penn Manor will host a Vaping Prevention and Awareness Night in the High School Auditorium beginning at 6:00 PM. This special event is intended for all parents, guardians, grandparents, friends, and community members and will be presented by the Caron Foundation with special guest speaker Ms. Stephanie Owsiany, Student Assistance Program Specialist.

This one-hour live presentation provides parents and caregivers of elementary, middle, and high school students with research-based information that can help reduce the chances that their teen will engage in substance use.

Please note that Penn Manor High School students will provide free child care for this event. While registration for this event is not required, we are asking that anyone needing child care for this event to please complete this Google Form no later than April 14, 2023, so that we are able to provide adequate child care coverage. We look forward to partnering with you to support our students!

West Point Summer Leaders Experience

On Wednesday, March 15th, West Point Admissions is hosting a Facebook Live session covering our Summer Leaders Experience (SLE), a one week summer camp in June at West Point. At SLE, students get to live in the barracks, eat in the mess hall, experience academic workshops, and complete two military days. Messiah University is offering their annual Young Writer’s Workshop, Young Filmmaker’s Workshop and Psychology Camp for the summer of 2022. All three workshops will be held on June 19-24, 2022 in person on campus.

The Filmmakers‘ and Writers‘ Workshops enhance student’s creativity, help them understand the future demands of college life and, most importantly, improve their abilities as writers and filmmakers. The Psychology Camp encourages students to explore their own ideas about psychology and biopsychology. All of the options offer a fun experience on a college campus this summer. Both resident and commuter options are available. Cost is between $575 and $699 depending on the camp and housing selection.

Academy Night- In person at PMHS

 On Friday, February 25th 6:30-8:30 pm, at Penn Manor High School, there will once again be an in-person Academy Night for the 11th District of Pennsylvania.  United States Service Academy Liaison officers, ROTC representatives and DODMERB personnel will be present to brief on their programs.  Information provided will include answers to the following:

    ·       The difference between attending an academy/ROTC and military recruiters
    ·       The value of attending a summer program at an Academy
    ·       Describing the ‘ideal’ candidate
    ·       Determining the difference between a nomination and an appointment

          Especially now, with the changes to SAT/ACT standards, extracurricular push, and hybrid learning, it is important for those students/parents/educators to understand the process and the rigors of the application/admission.

Live Online AI Program by Stanford PhD Students this Winter and Spring


AI Scholars Live Online is a 10-session (25 hours) pre-college enrichment program that exposes high school students (Grades 9-12) to fundamental AI concepts and guides them to build a socially impactful project. Taught by our team of graduate students from Stanford University, students receive a personalized, interdisciplinary learning experience with a student-teacher ratio of 4:1. Students with prior programming experience are placed in an advanced cohort. We offer multiple dates and times for our Winter Break and Spring Semester programs. AI Scholars Live Online guides students to build a socially impactful AI project in a domain of their interest such as healthcare, robotics, finance, and sustainability to showcase the skills they learned. This past summer and fall, over 900 students completed projects including tracing the origins of COVID-19 and predicting algorithmic bias in legal decision-making. Students attend live online classes in small groups with a student-teacher ratio of 4:1.

Program Description 

Through lectures and hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry, and medical ethics. Students will learn how laboratory science can be translated into improved human health and will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems. In addition, students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physical therapy, toxicology, genetic counseling, and biomedical laboratory research. The Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp will provide a fun, challenging, and engaging college environment in which students will develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a biomedical scientist and health professional.  

Camp Goals 

The goal for this camp is not only to provide students with a window into the scientific basis of human health, but also to offer them a glimpse of college life through an engaging and challenging academic experience.

Campers will live in a college residence hall, participate in lectures and laboratories in the state-of-the-art Neidig-Garber Science Center, and eat their meals in the newly renovated Mund Dining Hall. Additionally, campers will be mentored by resident advisors who are current LVC science majors. Resident advisors are selected based on their expertise in the sciences, as well as their maturity and experience mentoring younger students.

Cost: $1,000 (this all-inclusive camp fee covers room and board, laboratory supplies, lecture supplies, evening activities, guest speakers, etc.)
