What we are learning…

Math: We will finish our unit on three-dimensional shapes. We will see which ones can stack, roll, and slide. Help your child identify cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cones in your home.

Word Study: Our sight word this week is have. We will continue to work with the R-blends.

Writing: Students will write what they see after observing our new classroom butterflies. They will also create a piece about their Hawaiian Day experience.

Reading: Students will continue to be assessed with their Rainbow Words and nonsense words. We will have regular guided reading groups 2 of the 4 days this week. Allow time each evening for your child to proudly read their books to you!

Science: Last week one butterfly was born and over this past weekend two more. We are anxiously waiting for 3 more to emerge before we release them. Later in the week we will learn about the difference between living and nonliving things.

Congratulations to the PM class for filling their marble jar last week! They voted for bubbles. Our retake of bubble day (Mrs. Glassmyer’s recipe did not cooperate) went well (with store bought bubbles) and everyone had a good time.

After seeing a video of 3-D art using chalk, we wrote sight words and had some time to free draw on Chalk day!

Friday, May 3 is the school wide ice cream social.

The Minute to Win It practice sheet is not due until Monday, May 6.

Our Physical Education teacher, Mr. Binkley, is asking for parent volunteers for our Olympic Day held on Tuesday, May 14. I am sending a paper home to parents that already have their clearances with volunteer information. If you can help, please fill out the form and send it back in with your child. Writing: Using their observations and knowledge of caterpillars and butterflies from our science unit, students will create various writings this week.

Reading: Students will continue to be assessed with their Rainbow Words and nonsense words. We will have regular guided reading groups 4 of the 5 days this week. Allow time each evening for your child to proudly read their books to you!

Science: Last week and over the weekend, our caterpillars have changed into their chrysalis form. This week we will study the Butterfly Life Cycle from egg to butterfly. Your child will be an expert of butterflies by the time our butterflies complete their metamorphosis.

Update

Tomorrow is the first letter in our ABC Countdown to the end of the year. Bring a stuffed Animal to school. It must fit in your backpack.

Math: We will begin a new unit on three-dimensional shapes. Help your child identify cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cones in your home.

Word Study: Our sight word this week is for.We will continue to explore how the magic ‘e’ changes the sounds of a, e, i, o, and u. We will work with the L-blends bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl. And we will explore when to use c, k, and ck.

Writing: Students will start the week with an Earth day writing. Using the 5 writing steps, students will create an Easter writing piece.

Reading: Students will continue to be assessed with their Rainbow Words and nonsense words. We will have regular guided reading groups 2 of the 4 days this week due to PSSA testing in grades 3-6. Allow time each evening for your child to proudly read their books to you!

Science: Last week some caterpillars entered our classroom. They have been eating and getting fatter over the break. On Friday, we will read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and discuss the changes we observe with our own caterpillars. Exciting days are ahead!

You may notice that the same book keeps coming home to read each night. Due to the week of PSSA testing and special activities, we are not meeting with all of our reading groups. Keep practicing the book you have and go over the Rainbow Words. Bring the Rainbow Words back to school each day. We have extra help and are accessing our words everyday. Many of our kiddos are moving up the Rainbow.
