We are working very hard in second
grade on topic sentences, details and concluding sentences. We are trying to
identify them in our stories and also have been writing paragraphs using all of
those important elements.
This week we will start double digit
addition with and without regrouping. We will be using manipulatives to lead us
into writing the problems. Each day we have been working on basic math facts as
we try to become faster and also more accurate. Any flashcard or website
practice done at home with math facts may be listed on the October Reading
calendar for extra credit.
Have a super week. Just a reminder
that Friday is a 1:30 dismissal.
It is hard to believe that October is
already here! Thank you for adding up all of the September Reading minutes on
the reading calendar. We will now start reading for the October minutes.
Students will set a personal goal that is more than 120 minutes. Each month we
will find our three Reader Leaders who have gone way over the personal goal and
had the most minutes. Thank you for helping at home with signing the calendar
each time your second grader reads!
We will also start our E/I groups this
week. Students will be meeting with one of the four second grade teachers for a
thirty minute writing lesson each day.
Our reading groups and math stations have also started now that October

the other three second grades. Be sure
to ask your second grader about our Reader Leaders, our total minutes and our
bulletin board that displays our totals.
Have a super week!
This week in math we will continue to
work on addition strategies with word problems. We have been using cubes,
drawing pictures and counting up to solve addition problems. We will be jumping
into fact families and missing addends along with related facts in subtraction
as we move through chapter one.
We will continue to take our Spelling
Tests each Friday. Thank you for
practicing words at home each week. You can decide with your second grader
which bonus and robust words you feel he/she is ready for each week for the
