Today the Hambright Library was turned into an author’s museum. The first graders were so proud to share their “All-About” books with some special grown-ups. Many teachers, principals, parents, and little siblings attended our fantastic celebration today. Thank you!
All library books are due back tomorrow. Thanks for helping your first grader to be responsible, by assuring that his or her book is returned Wednesday! 🙂

Also, special thanks to Michaela’s family for giving Sparky a great safe home after school is out! We appreciate knowing Sparky will be in good hands!
We had one last follow-up lesson from the Hands-on House. This lesson was about light. Today our class made “Rainbow Catchers!” They assembled the catcher, but we were not able to make a rainbow. Here is how:
Half-fill a bucket with a strong soap solution (made from dishwashing liquid and water). Add 2-3 tablespoons sugar (the sugar makes a thicker, more viscous solution). Dip the tetrahedral bubble shape into the soap solution. Draw the “rainbow catcher” out slowly and examine the colors. Notice how the colored bands change as the soap solution sinks to the bottom of the shape.
Our first graders have enjoyed learning about the life cycle of a frog. They have been watching Sparky grow, eat, and swim around each day! By the end of the year he will still be in his cycle of changing into a frog. Please let me know if you would be interested in housing him after school ends and then letting him go near a pond after he becomes a frog (there’s one near Manor Middle). I would just need his container back next year. Otherwise, we will put him in the pond near the end of the year. It would be a great experience for your child. I have the food needed.
I forgot to post a few pictures from this month. First, the students proudly showing off their new Race for Education t-shirts. Way to go, raising $22,000 for our school!!!! (there is plenty of money leftover after purchasing the new shirts!).
Also, they wanted to practice writing spelling words in a fun way. Since the weather was so beautiful last week, they enjoyed writing with sidewalk chalk. Keep up the good work first grade!
Just a friendly reminder that our class will have time to shop at the Book Fair tomorrow (Thursday). If your child is shopping tomorrow, students should bring their money to school in a labeled envelope or other container to hold their coins/dollars. Thank you!
The Bookmobile is coming to Hambright neighborhoods, as well as some other locations, this summer. Anyone with a library card can borrow and return books over the summer.
