Mid-week announcements

A few reminders for the week/month:

Thursday we will review/take a practice test for the material covered in chapter 10, Decimals. The test will be given on Friday. I am proud of the effort and perseverance the students are putting into this chapter. Can’t wait to see their work on Friday!

We are completing Unit 4 in ELA. The girls and boys are working to determine point-of-view (and WHY they are using that point of view), to make inferences, and to draw conclusions. The unit assessment will be next Thursday and Friday. The kids are writing more in their TDAs, including the “Analysis” section of the organizer. We are ready to start putting the information into essay form!

This week’s spelling words are a doozie. Keep listening to the sentence to determine which form to use (plural, possessive, or plural-possessive!)

Social Studies lessons with Mrs. Rios and Mrs. Groff are going well. Students are working on some different regions and geographical features of our area.

Some students will receive mid-marking period reports to take home this week. Parents can always check their child’s grades online, but I’ll send home a few special notes this week.

Race for Education: We would like to have many address labels for the students to mail letters. The labels students bring will be placed on letters to send to family and friends. If each student in fourth grade can bring in an average of 6 labels, we’ll have a special afternoon this spring!

Valentines can be brought to school this week. We will have a small classroom celebration to share kindness and friendships. The Szentesy Squad shows that each day, but we’ll still honor the national holiday on the 14th!

BEST OF LUCK to our FOURTH GRADE MATH BOWL participants in the district math bowl tomorrow! Szentesy Squad members Hunter and Lucas will represent Hambright well!

Kids at Work!

Kids at Work Day is on Friday, February 21, 2020!

As a way to promote career exploration and awareness with our elementary students, the Penn Manor elementary schools are planning another special day across the district.

On Friday, February 21, 2020 students are invited to wear clothing that represents careers they may be interested in exploring as an adult. Adults in the building are encouraged to wear college/military/post secondary clothing. Adults  may also choose to dress up in clothing that represents a career.

Our hope is that Kids at Work Day will start conversations at home and at school about different types of careers, why someone chooses a career, and what kind of training/schooling is needed to get started in a particular career.

It’s hard for me to believe this is already our first day of February. The weather outside sure felt more like the first day of May!!

This week’s reminders:
Math: Tuesday, Feb. 4: Chapter 9 Math Test! We will then move into Chapter 10: Decimals.

Reading: Students performed well last week on the first test of the new unit. We are focusing on fiction again in Unit 4. Last week was “Because of Winn-Dixie” while today we learned a fun saying/lingo for writing a fiction summary (Somebody Wanted But So Then). We will learn more about summarizing and also learn to Draw Conclusions this week.

Spelling: This week we work on prefixes with our words in Lesson 18. The girls and boys did a wonderful job on the pretest today.

Grammar: We continue our Unit on Verbs. This week will be “future tense” verbs.

Content: Students completed the science unit with Mr. Showalter (tests were returned today). Tuesday the boys and girls will begin a new social studies unit with Mrs. Groff.

Hambright: This month we will focus on kindness. How can you show the tiniest act of kindness each day?

Other reminders:

Friday is an Early Dismissal!

Spelling Tests for Lesson 16 will be Friday (the 24th). We also have an early dismissal Friday at 1:30!!

Mr. Showalter’s Chemistry test will be administered next Tuesday. Students received a review/study guide this week, so they should have ample time to prepare for the assessment.

Remember that Report Cards will come home on Monday, January 27. Please review the contents, sign the envelope, and return it to school with your child.

As always, contact me with any questions/concerns. Thank you!

New Semester!

I can’t believe we are starting our third marking period of the school year. The second semester means that we had to say goodbye to Mr. Andrew and Applied Engineering for the year. We are excited to have Mrs. Ashworth teach us Library Instruction on Day C for the remainder of the year!
