ALTHOUGH WE ARE ON A 4 DAY SCHEDULE, WE WILL BE CONTINUING A SIX DAY STORYTOWN TEACHING CYCLE WITH A SPELLING TEST EVERY SIX DAYS.

In first grade, our reading series is based on Harcourt Brace’s program called Story Town. Each of the 30 lessons in Harcourt are broken down into 5 day cycles.   It is a 5-day themed lesson with a review on day 6 of the week’s theme.  The core areas of reading instruction that will be addressed are:  phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, high frequency words, and comprehension.  The program is literature based and includes the use of anthologies, trade books, big books, poems, phonemic awareness songs and games.

Below is a break down of what occurs each cycle day in Story Town:

DAY 1:  Lesson Introduction, new spelling pattern (students receive their spelling list), and read a “get started” story in our anthology

DAY 2:  Learn new high frequency words and new Focus skill for the cycle from our longer story in anthology, and continue to work on spelling pattern

DAY 3:  Work on new phonics skills for cycle, continue the Focus skill study, review spelling pattern, and read a short fiction/non-fiction passage to use new strategies

DAY 4 and 5: Review of all skills from days 1, 2 and 3

DAY 6:  Weekly spelling test and Focus Skill Project/Assessment
