Week of November 7th……

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well.  Here is what is going on this week.

TOMORROW (11/8):  Our Class goes to the Book Fair!!!

Curriculum News:                                                                                                                                     Reading:  Today, we did our second close reading of our narrative nonfiction, with a partner, in lesson eight.  We practiced our fluency as well as prepared ourselves for discussion of the comprehension questions.  When we discussed, with our partner, what we thought the correct multiple choice answer was, we had to support it with evidence from the text. The students were very focused on their lesson today, and the conversations that I was listening to were very impressive! Way to communicate and defend your answers fifth graders!!!  As the week continues, we will wrap up lesson eight with our vocabulary and sequencing text structure activities.  On Friday, we will will be working with an informational text about Veteran’s Day.

Math: This week in math we will continue our work on unit 5. To start the week, we will review the three addition properties and apply them to adding decimals. On Tuesday students will learn how to subtract decimals, paying close attention to borrowing from place values. By the end of the week, students will be practicing how to solve multi-step word problems with adding and subtracting of decimals combined. They will have a lot of real world problems involving money, and figuring out how much change they would get from a purchase. They will also be analyzing charts, and adding and subtracting decimals based on the information presented in the chart. Unit 5 will wrap up next Tuesday 11/12 with the test, so we are working hard this week to get prepared for it.

Spelling:  This week we have a review lesson so we didn’t have a pretest today nor are there any bonus words.  Also, the homework packet is four pages instead of three.  I reviewed and showed this to the children in hopes that it will be a visual reminder since we usually only have three pages.  The  packet is still due on Thursday, and our test is on Friday.

Reminders:

Wednesday (11/9), Thursday (11/10), and Friday (11/11) are early dismissal days at 1:30.  I am really looking forward to meeting with all of you for your child’s conference!  Take care, and I’ll see you then!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
