Week of September 10th…

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had a nice weekend despite the rain that we received.  Here’s what’s coming down the pike this week that will strengthen our brains by  s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g them. We are ready for our first five day week of the school year!  I know we will all keep our growth mindsets on!

Curriculum News:

Math: This week in math we will be wrapping up our first unit on place value.  Monday we worked on our hardest skill yet, focusing on shifting values to the left and right, learning that it is ten times larger to the left and 1/10 the value to the right. On Tuesday we will review everything we have learned so far in the first unit with some stations. Wednesday will be the first unit test of the year. On Thursday we will review the test, and begin the second unit. Unit 2 will start with finding prime factors of numbers, and determining if a number is prime or composite. Friday we will work on exponents for the first time, and talk about how an exponent is repeated multiplication of the base number. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!

Reading:  We worked very hard last week but were not able to wrap up lesson one by the end of the week. So, today we picked up where we left off.  We did our first independent study and buddy study of our lesson one vocabulary words.  This prepared us to be successful when we completed our first vocabulary activity of the school year today.  For the remainder of the week, we will work through our focus skill activities and begin learning how to mark up a TDA prompt and write two-column notes.  If we complete this, we will begin lesson two.

Spelling:  Your child received their first spelling homework packet today if she/he does spelling with me.  Everyone knows that the homework packet is due Thursday and that the test is on Friday.  Each child wrote this in their planner, and I wrote it on the homework information board.

Thank you for your support and have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Eby 🙂
