Week of January 14th…

Hello 5th Grade Families,

Well, it seems that winter is definitely upon us… Brrrrrr! Here is what is coming down the pike for our four day week that will encourage us to keep strethching our brains.

Curriculum News:

Reading:  In reading this week, we will continue to identify a character’s actions, motives, and qualities so we can compare and contrast different characters throughout a narrative or amongst 2 stories. We will also continue our quest to determine the theme of a story by reading and analyzing the details from the text. On Wednesday or Thursday, the students will be divided into 3 different Martin Luther King Junior Readers’ Theaters.  They will work together to assign the different parts and begin practicing their fluency.

Spelling:

Your child received her/his spelling homework packet today. The children know that this packet is due Thursday, Also, due to our four day week, our test will also be on Thursday.

Math: This week in math we will be ending our 8th unit of the year. Monday we will focus on comparing fractions using the least common denominator(LCD) and checking with cross multiplication. Tuesday the students will learn how to convert fractions to decimals by converting denominators to tens or hundreds. Wednesday will be a review day for every skill we learned. Thursday will be test day, so make sure to get the study guide done Thursday night. Keep up the hard work in math fifth graders!
